After Market Steering Wheel Options--

Gary Boone

I chose to go with the Momo adapter part # 3503 and it fits the splines on the steering shaft perfectly. I researched many options including the Grant system. The drawbacks I saw for Grant were that I didn't want to have use a key to release the steering wheel every time and all the Grant steering wheels are deep dish. I bought the Momo Tuner steering wheel which is flat. I needed a flat wheel because of the added length of the adapter and the quick release component that's 2.5 " long. My quick release is a NRG Gen 2.5 NRG makes a thinner version but requires an adapter plate to mate to the Momo wheel. I was trying minimize adapters. But with all the components, my new system still pushes the wheel 3 inches further out. It still seems to feel right but I'm tall (6'-2") so my feet reach the pedals and it doesn't feel like the steering is right up in my chest. It brings the steering wheel closer to me by about 3" but it makes my elbow angle closer to the ideal angle of 90 degrees for racing. It just feels good to me anyway. Total cost was probably more than the Grant system. Total cost was $400 plus shipping. Thanks for the coolness compliment. I like it too. But if you decide to do the route I took, we need to talk because it was not a straightforward install. There are no instructions in English, and I ran into several pitfalls I had to overcome. The Momo adapter is very tight on the roadster steering splines. Once you install the adapter and tighten the nut, it's impossible to remove the adapter and reorient it without a 2 arm puller and an extension for the puller. It's that tight. So I suggest you slide the Momo adapter on just partially, check the orientation of the other components before you tighten the big nut. It's extra work but well worth the time. And you'll need to bend the roadster's brass tang for the horn outward about a 1/4 inch. I spent a lot of time removing and re-installing components and troubleshooting my horn circuit and relay just because the tang didn't make contact with the brass ring on the adapter. The terminal on the horn wire on the adapter is not insulated and if it makes contact with any metal on the adapter, it will make the horn blow. So after I connected the jumper wire to the adapter wire, I wrapped it with electrical tape. There are lots of spare components that you don't need to use, so you have to figure out which ones to use or not. To make the horn circuit work there's a flat ring with a spade that you have to install to connect the jumper wire to complete the horn circuit. There's a sleeve in the package that you slide into the quick release outer portion that makes the horn button fit snugly. I had to pull the horn button outward from where it should seat so it wouldn't be too recessed inside the ring on the outside of the steering wheel. And be careful when tightening the allen screws to the steering wheel. When I was doing this, the allen wrench slipped out and I scratched the crap out of the horn button. Hope this helps.

Nardi wheel

That's the one, it's confirmed by Gboone in another post. http://www.311s.org/phpBB3/search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=grant+steering+4581

I ordered the Grant adapter from Jegs and the Grant-to-Nardi polished adapter from LTB auto. I think the Al adapter will look nice up next to the brushed metal Nardi wheel.

Well I finally got around to refinishing my Nardi wheel and installing it this weekend. I'm not 100% done as I have to cut down the black Grant adapter cover a bit and still have some work to do on the horn and horn button.

But I LOVE the way it feels. It's just a little thicker than the stock wheel and it just "fits."

I just did mine. I bought the Grant hub and the Momo "grant-to-momo" adapter (3 bolt to 6 bolt) so I could install a Momo Prototipo wheel. The install went very smoothly. The pins in the Grant can be pushed in until they clear your clock assembly -- **BE CAREFUL about this!***

The only minus is a little rubbing on the stock plastic housing and that the adapter brings the wheel a little bit closer.

I'm going to get the Momo hub next, but you have to trim the pins on that one. I just want to see if it brings the wheel away from me a bit more.

Does that help? There is a thread on here with part numbers.

Well I finally got a new steering wheel. I went with the Grant 870 and the 4581 installation kit. I did not have to modify anything. The adapter and wheel fit great. I did have to bend the horn contact a little. The adapter is made from soft aluminum and the bolts galled on me so be very careful during assembly.

The wheel is great. I was concerned that the wheel may feel to soft and spongy. It does not. The wheel is solid with a thin layer of dense foam. My comfort behind the wheel is greatly improved. A relatively cheap improvement.

I too found the original wheel to be restrictive when getting in/out of my car, I managed to find a Momo adapter no 12115114805 which fits another datsun model, 180B, not sure if you get them in America, as there was nothing avail for the roadster, the shaft size/taper/spline were the same but when put it on I could only get 3/4 of a full nut engagment and it also fouled the plastic shroud, so I removed the copper horn contact ring, and turned 8mm out of centre and and put copper ring back in place, which gave me a full nut, and clears the shroud nicely the Momo boss has plenty of metal and so didnt weaken it at all, I then found a nice wheel on E/Bay new from a seller in Malaysia, but as you know the original wheel is dished, and because the momo adapters length is greater than the original the wheel needs to be much flatter, I am very happy with the result, the new wheel is 3/8 " closer than original which I find is ok for me.. Just my solution...and $158 Aus...

Taking a break from cleaning up after Hurricane Ike... I installed a Grant 13.5" diameter steering wheel with a #4581 adapter on my 70 SPL. Purchased the steering wheel from ebay member "imctjt", transaction was flawless. His bid indicated that additional steering wheels are available.

Having just gone through this, maybe I can shed some light on my efforts to replace the stock wheel.

I purchased a beautiful, used Nardi three spoke steering wheel on ebay for not a lot of money. Then came the hard part: the adapter. Apparently the roadster adapter for MOMO/Nardi wheels is the "3500" which is almost impossible to find. A friend of mine has a parts business that sells MOMO steering wheels and couldn't get it for me in the parts inventory. So what I did was get the "3503" adapter for the 240Z/510 and made it work. All I had to do was file down the turn-signal cancelling pins so that the hub would seat all the way on the steering wheel splines properly. It really wasn't all that much work.

Then to adapt the Nardi wheel to the MOMO hub I had to get a 1/4" spacer/adapter since the bolt patterns are different.

It ended up looking like this:

I've run Momo's on all my Datsuns over the years. The proper hub for the 2000 sounds like it's getting tough to find. That's OK, because it was solid metal anyway and not collapsible like the later Momo hub that fits on the 510. Sounds like part number 3503 to me. If you run this hub with one of the Momo wheels with the large triangle of metal in the middle of it, it is designed to provide a large area for your chest in the event of an accident and decrease trauma. The collapsible hub, 3503, is part of this system.

350mm momo's will block your gauge view a bit, but they will feel really nice with the play we often have in our Roadster steering systems. Prototipo's are period correct for the car and can be found at reasonable prices, even new for less than $300 I think.
