Gas Caps

Published 2020

There are early and late gas caps. The early have a cork gasket and mine had a nut holding the lid on the cap. The later caps have a rubber gasket and the lid is held on by the pin being swaged on to the pin.

The early gas caps can be taken apart pretty easily for re-chroming if needed. You need to remove the two bolts on the back side to pull the locking mechanism off. You can then reach the nut holding the gas cap lid to remove it. Next insert the key and rotate the assembly until you can see the circlip pin on the back side. Use a small flat tip screwdriver to push the circlip in while pushing the entire lock assembly out the front side of the cap.

I did not do the later cap. Some one had removed the lock assembly by drilling a hole in the back so you can reach the circlip. I think there has to be another way other than drilling a hole to access the circlip like the earlier gas cap but since I do not have one of those caps I cannot be certain. According to Shannon the later gas cap he had to do this. I have. Getting the cylinder out is not easy. The cylinder has a spring loaded tab that fits into a slot in the housing. I drilled a small hole that allowed me to press the tab in and release the cylinder. After rechroming, I reinserted the cylinder and jb welded the hole. I'll check and see if I have one apart so I can take some pics.
