Parts Compatability with 510

Post by Nevada Dave »

As my son and I are working on restoring his '70 1600, we're running up against the old problem of finding what we need at our local auto parts stores. I noticed that the Datsun 510 of the same year has the same size engine, but different carbs. 510 parts are still stocked. Are my assumptions correct in assuming that most of the 510's engine parts can be used on our Roadster? Does anyone know the compatibility of the ignition system parts? Is there a parts list published somewhere that details modern equivilents?

Thanks, NV Dave

510 parts in the Roadster

Post by 70MTroadster »

I own a 71 510 4 door and a 70 Datsun 1600 Roadster. The 510 has an L series overhead cam engine while the Roadster engine is an R series pushrod engine. They are not similar at all, nor can parts be interchanged between them.

The clutch master cylinders are the same though.

As Minh says, this site has a wealth of info on what IS interchangeable between the two models.

Good luck!

It depends on what kind of parts you need. The 1600 parts are readily available at the Nissan Forklift dealer. The front brakes are the same as Jaguar XK 120 - 140 and MGA twin cam. These are just examples. Ask if you run into issues - the vendors can usually help out!

The rear drums I believe are interchangeable. Some documentation from another post lead me to this belief. It seems back then they only made one kind of rear drum.

I sure they might be a few exceptions. Few things are absolute.
