Hand Throttle Controller

Has anyone ever disassembled the hand throttle controller to adjust its ‘stickiness’ or to replace the cable? Tips and tricks? Thanks!

+1 on this

I literally just removed mine a few days ago but kept the 2 cables attached... I was planning on removing them, cleaning the main unit, and replacing for new cables but I have no idea how to remove/release the 2 cables from the main unit.

EDIT: I realized I am actually talking about the choke and not throttle

Choke cable has been done many times, there are several threads about this, search function is your friend!

Indeed, search produces a lot of complete hand choke/throttle replacement threads and info, but not how to remove/release/replace the cable from the friction unit (controller) that mounts to the dash. Or maybe I'm missing it. Thanks.

Agreed. This is also what I am looking for - if I find it I'll let you know.

I found this link for the older choke - maybe it will work for us?

So hard to describe, but if you want to give me a call, I can talk you through it. Like most things easier to take apart than reassemble.

And you will need a camera

818 448 3181 - after 5P Pacific.

Thanks, Nick, and Peter. Once I eyeball the controller 'cage', I may be able to mimic what was done with the early choke Operating Assembly. If not, I be placing a call to Peter after 5pm Pacific, with the over/under being more like after 7 pm Pacific. Thanks again, both!

Later choke is quite different in structure - uses one LOOONG inner cable and two outers and the 'stickiness' is managed by an 'ovoid' piece of plastic sandwiched between two other pieces.

I have a 68-79 choke (dis)assembly on my desk ready to go.

I'm going to pull the '68 throttle controller this weekend and eyeball it first, so I will hope to participate in a later weekend sequel. Thanks!

OK, so having removed the hand throttle controller, if I slide the retainer spring off the two white nylon clutches, the clutches may be removed, and the question becomes how to separate the captive end of the cable from the throttle plunger. Cut it off, then drill out the end of the plunger to accept a new cable and re-crimp it? Suggestions? Thanks.

I removed the hand throttle controller and cable cover, cut the inner cable at the end of the plunger, and installed a new inner cable in the cover. Question now is how to attach the new inner cable to the old plunger, such that the length and end-play are correct to operate the plunger and throttle full range. One thought is to bore the plunger out full-length, install the inner cable through the plunger, reinstall in car, then crimp the cable into place in the plunger once the required range of motion is assured. Other ideas? Thanks.

measure OLD cable before cutting it. We (Emmie and I) were able to open up 'crimp', remove old wire and recrimp. Remember (IMHO) the hand throttle is really only used (if at all) for warm-up - doesn't need THAT much THROW.
