A Few Stupid Questions

Post by sworxx »

Hi, I'm a new 68 2000 owner, and had a few dumb questions.

1. What weight oil is best? I live in NJ.

2. Is there a problem with running unleaded gas in these cars? Weren't these cars built before unleaded gas?

3. Will platinum plugs make any difference? Should they be used?

4. Are there point replacement kits out there? I know they have them for older mini's. If so, where do you get 'em?

5. Which brake fluid should be used? Can I run ATE Super Blue? Or do I need to use a DOT-3, DOT-4?

Thanks. I'm sure I'll have other stupid questions as they come up.

not stupid questions

Congratulations on your find. Is it a solex car or su?
As for your oil questions, 10-40 is fine, Unleaded gas is a good thing, Nissan had the forsight to use hardened valve seats when they designed the car. Platinum plugs might make a difference, I use Splitfire plugs in my car, and you can still get new points, the 1600 (R16) engine is commonly found in forklifts. Synthetic brake fluid can be used, but you must first flush all the DOT3 or 4 out. I think synthetic reacts with the standard stuff. If you have anymore questions, please feel free to post here and someone will get back to you.

1. What weight oil is best? I live in NJ.

I can only say what I use in sunny California.
a) differential : 140W
b) tranny : 80W90 or 75W85
c) engine: 20W50
Go a lighter if it is colder climate. Never been to NJ, but I assume it's cold.

2. Is there a problem with running unleaded gas in these cars? Weren't these cars built before unleaded gas?

Run Premium. The 91 octone rating will slower the combustion, lower heat, and give more horsepower. The lead additive back in the day was to provide this function. You can go 101 octane if you have access to tractor fuel.

3. Will platinum plugs make any difference? Should they be used?

Platinum never hurts. If you can get more complete combustion your car will thank you. Plus you get more power, cleaner burn, and milage. I use the platinum quad spark plugs, so I'll never need to set the gap space ever again.

4. Are there point replacement kits out there? I know they have them for older mini's. If so, where do you get 'em?

Use the 79 Honda Civic's. If you can afford it go EI Dizzy you'll be better off. I going to a rotorless EI Dizzy myself.

5. Which brake fluid should be used? Can I run ATE Super Blue? Or do I need to use a DOT-3, DOT-4?

Stick with 3 and change the fluids accordingly. I use SynPower; it exceeds 3 and 4, and can be mixed with the pre-existing 3 or 4 too. Unless you have problems with rust, the other DOTs require a changeover that a pain.
