Dead engine

Post by SLOroadster »

So I pulled my engine apart to replace the rings today. Everything looked good until I pulled the pistons and found cracks in all 4 running from the oil control ring groove down the side of the skirt. I think Shasta is out of the question. Once again I have found that nothing is as simple as it should be with this car. The new engine will be really cool however.

Dead engine

So does anyone want to loan an engine out for a trip to Shasta?
Just kidding.

Engine

Post by SLOroadster »

Ok here is what I will be building. Unfortunetly it will be illegal as all heck to race CSP autoX. I have a knife-edged crank that is 5 lbs lighter than stock, stock rods, .060 oversized pistons, and everything will be balanced. That is to go with the rest of the cool stuff I already have on the current engine. I'm going to do my best to get it built and mostly broken in by shasta. Its doubtfull if it will happen but my luck could change. If nothing else, I will have the torque monster when I'm done. .060 is maximum displacement for a U20, I should be about 2100ccs, or about 126 cubic inches.

As for a engine swap, never.

rolling the dice for this one, we'll see what happens.

engine

So I just talked to my machinest and it looks like this could actually happen. My fingers are crossed. If I can get the pistons this week, I can have it back together in a week and a half. (I hope)

Hey Will,

Stating the obvious here, but after the overbore your block is on it's last legs. I might be wrong here, but you will either need to sleve the chambers or attain another block.

The good news is if you attain another block you can reuse your old pistons. Of course the number won't be matching anymore if that matters to you.

Anyways, I got my finger crossed for ya.

Overbore

Post by SLOroadster »

I know it will be the biggest I can go. The current block is not the correct one anyway. Also Nissan blocks are really hard and rarely need to be bored out unless there is significant scoring to the bores. I don't even need to bore my block, I want to bore my block. I am going for maximum displacement. I also have faith that the engine won't granade on me also. If at some point down the road I need a block, I will deal with it then. For now I'm going for maximum Hp, torque and displacement. I considered staying legal for SCCA, but then I thought I do more fun stuff than serious racing so the heck with it.

So I finially got all my parts to the machinest yeaterday, but I was told that my harmonic balancer (front crank pully) is unuseable. Does anyone have one? I need it ASAP. Shoot me an email if you can help.

getting closer

Post by SLOroadster »

I have all the parts, everything is balanced except for the harmonic balancer. The block is bored, it is getting close! Perhaps next weekend I will have a car to drive... I can't wait to unleash this monster.

will it ever end?

Post by SLOroadster »

Ok, so I have all the parts, and everything should be good to go, right? So I started checking ring gaps and that sort of thing, only to find that my oil control rings are WAY out of spec.     .

What next?
