IDLE PROBLEM???

Ok, here I go again! I got a timing light and set the timing on my engine. Of course, that was after I checked again the spark plugs' gap and the breaker point as well. I start the engine with the choke pulled out, and even after the engine is warmed up, I can't keep the engine running without the choke being partially engaged. When I lift the back carb's piston (to disable it) the revs go up. The smoke coming from the exhaust is not dark, so I guess that the mixture is not rich.......but I am a little scared tuning the carbs because that is way beyond my areas of knowledge.

I don't know how to determine what area is wrong (air, fuel, etc.). After I set the timing, I didn't connect the vacumm from the distributor to the rear carb....don't know how much of a difference that makes, and I don't know if it has to be disconnected when dealing with the carbs.

HELP!

yes, you definitely need to hook up the vacuum back on.
you won't be able to idle very well w/out it. it provides
added advance for idling speeds.

Also, if you slightly lift the carb piston(do this 1mm at a time),
and notice an inrease in rev, then, yes, you're running rich
in that carb. more accurately, the correct engine response when you lift the piston is a slight increase in rev, then a drop off. if it stays high, you're rich.

there is a nozzle underneath the carb that adjusts
the richness. turning it IN will lean out the mixture.

Thanks for the info...I will get to it ASAP. As to Solvang, yes I am going. I'm not sure if the car will be ready to go, but I will certainly be there. I just discovered a hole in my radiator... and I still need to finish the interior, but hopefully everything will be ready for then or at least the car will be ugly but driveable!

If it is a small one you can fix that with some JB Weld. Just remove and clean real good before applying it. Let dry to rock hard and paint.

There is a new JB Weld that drys in 3 minutes.

Minh: I have some good JB Weld that worked really well on one of the copper tubes coming out of the heater valve connected to the head...... the hole is small indeed, and I will remove the radiator today and try to fix it. I also have an extra radiator that seems to be "hole-free", but I haven't tested it under the pressure of the cooling system....I'll test tht one while the JB cures on the other one.........we'll see!
