can this engine be converted to rear wheel drive?

I believe it can. I remember reading a post or webpage related to that.

However time, money, and effort would better spent getting a motor and tranny for a RWD.

Not much more I can say about that....

Do not waste your time trying to convert the FWD version of the KA24DE engine found in the Altima to RWD. For starters, you will need to convert the intake plenum, and water lines just to make it work, and then you would have to find a transmission to bolt up to the block-- yes, the FWD version of the KA has a different block/head/flywheel/clutch/starter/oil pan, etc. than the RWD version...

As cheap as RWD KA24DE's are on the used market, you would be much better off just buying a take-out KA from a 240SX owner who is doing an SR20DET swap.
