The S20 engine was found in the 432Z and the C10 and C110 Skyline's.

This engine made 160hp with 2.0liters of displacement. This engine is VERY rare, VERY expensive, and very hard to find parts for. How expensive you ask? Restored valve covers (with the wrinkle coat redone) can sell for over $1000.

I can't see putting one of these unobtanium engines into a roadster, or non-Skyline (or 432Z) application-- they are just too rare, and too expensive!

Just think, you can get your 160hp (real HP, not 70s' Datsun mystery HP) from an S14 SR20DE for the price of a restored S20 valve cover!

Sid!

Hey, when you talk to your buddy, can you like some details of what he did in tuning 200 horses at the wheels?

I'm droolingly curious...

Regarding the "Fairlady S" thank you very much...

Of course now that I've seen the photos I will now be searching for a factory NISMO hardtop.

DO you guys think the higher arched rear fender looks better or worse than than the stock rear arched fenders?

Minh,

I will try to get details, but they may not be willing to share too much. I want to know them as well for my own car!

The hardtops are sweet. I have one. In reality, the snugtops and parrish plastics tops are MUCH better tops, but I like the shape of the OEM unit.

Yeah lets hear more about 200HP from a stock U20. It aint stock if it's putting out anywhere near that. The only reliable numbers I know of from a more or less stock U20 w/ solex's and a B cam were 130HP at the wheels. So Nissan's ratings aren't far off the mark. A fully prepared EP engine is making around 225 at the flywheel. That take significant cylinder head work, high compression pistons, and more cam than a stock B cam.

Ahhh... the finer points of the automotive club message board... no concrete info., just "I heard this", "my friend told me", and the famous "They don't make them anymore, but I got the last one"...

Can we please make it a habit to post pertinent, helpful info.

We all try very hard to post helpful info. FYI (I logged in) we stand behind our comments while others do not. If you are going to criticize at least have the courtesy to log in other wise keep nasty comments to yourself.

And there is a wealth of information on this site as well links to others so unless you expect us to design, build, paint and hand deliver your project to you, Im sorry to say we cant help you.

My 3 cents worth.
My apologies to the rest of the group if I have offended anyone with my ramblings.

Thx

This forum realy realy tries to contribute pertanent info. Some answers can not be had becuase the source with the info is not a poster on the forum. Be patient or help.

Regarding "They don't make them anymore, but I got the last one"... That happens a lot. The cars are pretty rare and rare option on a rare care is the norm.

Back to the String....

The BRE info pages state that yes the U20 can be tuned to crank close to 200HP at the flywheel. It being a realiable daily driver is another...

It just a matter of how and what Peter Brock did exactly is the question. They guy owned a dyno, so spent untold hours tinkering with the thing.

Bob Sharp's Racing prep will have some tips, but I believe we have all read it.

BRE's tuning tricks (Yes, I believe it) might be possible; however, is it possible running the tune job on standard 92 octane unleaded fuel with 12.8:1 compression? Anyone?

Will in SLO has his U20 at about 10:1 compresion and can only run on 92 octane fuel.

Rare Engines?

Post by dat68s »

Ok,
So I hope I am logged in, if not, it's DAT68S here...

Anyhow, I saw people talking about rare engines, and I remembered about this Datsun web-site here in Aus. Here is the link to details about the LZ twin cam engine, that could be used in one of our little cars...
http://www.datrats.com.au/lz_twin_cams.htm
Based on the afore mentioned S20.

Enjoy!

OK all, I was mistaken. I got the Roadster confused with another vehicle. The Roadster was making about 170hp (Flywheel) Mild porting and good tuning/setup on the engine is the extent of it.

My apologies for any confusion.
