whistling sound at carb?

Post by davids »

Thanks for the response on the electric fuel pump, works great. I now seem to be getting a whistling sound around my carbs? Any thoughts. And any suggestions on the best way to, or better chemical, to clean and polish aluminum in the engine area.
Thanks

If you want to polish stuff, buy a buffing wheel. As for sounds from the carbs, sometimes SUs make a whistling sound at idle, my solexs make a sucking sound at idle. Its hard to pin point without hearing the sound in person.

This is a shot in the dark, but I gonna take a SWAG at it.

(SWAG= Silly Wild Ass Guess)

See if the whistling noise is coming from the shaft. If the shaft has some play or the that piece of paper it uses as a gasket is worn to crap that migh tbe causing it.

Maybe, try spraying some WD-40 on the shaft at idle.

Must be one of those Disney carbs - you know - like in Snow White - Whistle while you work....

Just kidding. Remember the design of the carbs - the dash pot has a small hole in the bottom so that the vacuum created by the engine sucking air through the carb can pull the piston up - thereby altering the needle setting. That design can make a whistle. With the aircleaner on, it is tough to hear, but with it off it is much more prominent. If it was running poorly before, you may not have heard it due to the other noises.

Of course, I could be wrong....

Sorry,..

I meant the throttle shaft(s), both sides.

At this point trying to pinpoint the source of the whistling answer a lot of questions.

BTW: I would "whistle while I work," but... that would just be too distracting to my Co-workers. It's one of those tunes that you can't get out of your head once it starts.
