Turbo addition??

Can turbos be added to R1600 engines?? ..if so.. how much more power is noted, and approximently how much money would such an addion add up to be?

I been kicking around this idea for awhile but have not yet appplied any of it yet. I not at that phase of my project yet. Don't know or heard of anyone taking there inducted roadster to a dyno, so HP is not exactly.

I have found evidence of turboed R1600s in pieces of literature. Also I know of only one person who did it - Mike Kerr at Roadster Restoration in Placerville. I have a U20 and using referencial info from a fellow baord member from Austraila. He has a supercharged U20. I'v have seen a few Nitrous Roadster on the web.

Compression:
You need a 3mm copper head gasket. This will run you about $300.

Fuel Delivery:
What do you have now? You need either to single SU (double floated for 2x fuel) or get some turbo ready Dellorto's/Webers. Don't know the cost of the dual floated SU. However, a pair of used 40mm Dellortos or Webers go for about $140-200 on EBay.
If SU you'll have to mount the SU on the turbo intake Turbo. the turbo ready Dellorto/Webers can be positoned after the Turbo.

Manifolds on Turbo:
Then you need some custom work for the intake and exhaust manifolds for the turbo. Depending on what materials you want to use the cost could be anything. As for Turbo pricing that is your choice. This might now work but the Skyline has a ceramic bearing trubo that has an awesome spinup - very little trubo lag.

Air Delivery:
You need to fashion an new air filter intake. The easiest is a bolt mushroom filter intake - $40. It gets even more complicated when you try adding intercooler. Water injection is an option.

Combustion:
If you keep the stock distributor with the vacuum advance you gonna have to make that work some how. Gary Boone's EI Dizzy is $125.

Lubrication:
Don't know cost. That will be determined by what turbo you use. Oil or water or both. This will require plumbing work.

You will need it to stay below 7 boost pressure below 1000 feet elevation to avoid pre-combustion without an intercooler or water injection. Don't know about above 1000 feet.

Gosh. ...Just doesn't seem worth it anymore!! Hardly worth the cost!!!

Oh well ..was an interesting idea anyway I guess..

Well the cost can be reduced greatly if you learn how to doit yourself.

It's the labor that get ya' ;)

Fuel Pressure

Don't forget a rising rate fuel pressure regulator for the Webers. The pressur has to compensate for boost pressure at a given RPM when you pressurize Webers / Mikuni's. At idle for instance, 7 PSI may be too much, while is 8.5PSI is obtained, it will be too little.
