Headlight Relay advice

Post by Skyman »

So I was reading through Daryl Smith's write-up on a headlight relay replacement. I don't have a relay, so I need to figure something out. I'm not sure I want to spend the $100 the vendors charge for this. Has anyone done this replacement? Does any SPDT relay work? Is there one that "looks" better than another? Slowboy also has some interesting comments at the bottom of the article. How many have wired theirs in this manner? Any insight would be appreciated.

Yes, any relay (SinglePoleSingleThrow or SPDoubleT) will work as long as it's got the correct amp rating for the intended useage. They all pretty much look the same (black plastic) but I'm sure you could find a chrome one at a hot rod shop for $$$. I would just go with the single relay setup and keep an extra one in the spares kit. I have bought stuff from this place and been happy with the service and price. You can also get a harness for the relay cheaply to make for a clean install. Check out http://www.wiringproducts.com/index1.html

Here are a couple pics of my setup that I am using for the fuel injection/stereo/electric fan.

Here's a nice diagram for wiring it in. This is for a single pole. A double pole will have an 87a terminal also that you would not use. 86 would be the trigger from the switch.

Kyle,

I don't know if one SPDT looks better than another. I am using the HELLA. You can buy the base wired or not, waterproof or not.

I used the original relay to trigger the two new relays. One relay for the high beams and one for the low. If you look at the stock schematic you will see the light relay where D is low and M is high. They are the triggers for the new relays. Look at the custom schematic to see how it would be wired. The colors of the wires in the custom are different so compare the connection points to the stock as they are marked.

This schematic is the stock 66-67:

This schematic is the custom for the 66:

From the TechWiki. Thirty bucks and basically plug 'n' play. Don't get much simplier:
