I wanted to clarify something, All else being equal for pistons,rods ,crank, etc
An H20 block with R16 head vs a stroked R16 block should make the same output in HP no?

I asked the question because someone was telling that the R20 would make more power and that does not seem to make sense since it essentially the same block

I sure the cams are different, so if you are talking using the short block H20 vs R16 stroker, I would bet he is correct.

Well.... here's my understanding of what makes power; the cylinder head, specifically flow. As long as the displacement is the same, and with rods, pistons etc being of similar weight and design, it is the efficiency and effectiveness of the "air pump" that an engine is that makes the most difference, and that is mainly controlled by the head (port flow, valve size, chamber design) and everything the feeds and exits air, i.e. carbs, intake, cam, header/exhaust. I don't think the block itself would matter other than some have liked the 3 main over the 5, supposedly it has less resistance or something? I would think the 5 main would be stronger, and a better balanced crankshaft as well for higher rpms, but that's just a guess. My buddy Damn it Bill takes pride in telling others about his "forklift motor", and it goes very good.

Correct. The block itself will make no difference. ALL else being equal, including preparation, clearances, etc.
There will always be some variance, even among identically prepared engines, but, the difference would be quite small....

If you search the threads you should find that a certain H20 head is the one to get for all out performance......

I'm heading down the road of stroking my '70 1600 (currently all stock) and from reading this thread (and some others) have started making up my parts list. Getting the H20 crank is in process now. I'm contemplating whether to pull my existing motor and stroking it, or source another motor and building that one out. I understand there are a myriad of variables in answering my next question, but here goes: what would be a nominal price and availability of an existing 5 main bearing, R16 motor to use as a "core" to build up? Mind you, I lean more towards keeping the matching numbers in my car; but heck, I can always keep the stock motor on hand if I built up from scratch and swapped it out...

Seems like R16s were pretty much growing on trees a little while ago. like $300 for a turn key engine and tranny.

Yup. There's been a couple complete R16's for around $300 in the PNW the last year or two. Heck, I tossed a bare 5-main block a few years ago that no one wanted, however, it was already .040 over.

That said, I did keep one nice 5-main block for "some day."

I am going the stroker route with a 2000 five speed. I have 2 5main blocks, one is standard bpre with very little ridge and the other is .75mm or more over. I am thinking going VG30DE pistons, but still seems a lot of research and measurement needs to be done. My head is a cast iron 1600 head. I am wondering of there are any flow potential differences between the early aluminum heads and the cast iron heads.

I'll send you some links for pistons. There are lots of options, but realistically not very much is gained with the VG's.
H20 in +.060 is the most economical for the power.
