1970 datsun 1600 build thread
Okay my name is Julio I’m from Texas. I’m 15 years old and i have always been into all types of cars. But up to now I’m starting to work together with my dad on restoring cars. So that means this is my first son and father project. The car we are restoring is a 1970 1600 Datsun with the r16 engine and 4 speed transmission. The car has some rust but not that bad due to the age it has. Up to now i have only seen 4 holes on the whole car and the biggest one is smaller than a penny. (Wrong it's worst than that the carpet was hiding the corner on the floor panel.) The only parts I think I need from my point of view up to now will have to be the carbs and the carb manifold to have it running and the fuel pump. As none of them came with the car when purchased. Other than that i will have to do the normal things like changing the interior carpet and seats re upholstering. My future plans for this car is to get it painted under and all around including the chassis. But that will be done by a car painter. Also the wiring will be changed and the grill will have to be homemade because i haven't found one . (On my price range haha im cheap.) The engine looks as if it has been rebuild so that a plus. The brakes and all the master cylinders from the clutch and brakes are wack. O also the car doesen't have brakes at all only the rear ones. Also the suspension was replaced with a new set. The car was bought for $830 u.s dollars and it think it was a good deal for all the new goodies it has.

Something about these cars gets into your blood.-David

Great starting set of photos. Looks like you are not wasting any time tearing it down. Bummer on the rust, but really, I have seen much worse, so far that all looks repairable. Look in the vendor links section, several vendors can supply sheet metal, Sports Imports has all the floorboards I believe.

Im actually not repairing the floor because i dont know how to weld. Even though i whant to learn how to. Also right now the car is not in my house it's at the painters house. So im not working on the build but probobly next week i will start to remove the engine, and body from the chassis. But that will only be to help the painter repair the floor panles. Also i have to wait a little more becuase i dont have too much money right now and i have to ask for money people owe me. Yes i might be 15 yr but i know how to do business.

Re: 1970 datsun 1600 build thread
Awesome project. You certainly didn't waste any time getting stuck into the rebuild (or teardown).
When you want to take the body off the chassis, you can consult the page in the tech wiki:
http://www.311s.org/pmwiki-311/pmwiki.p ... yFromFrame" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I also made a manual you can make use of here: http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/2365010 ... a=y&dnad=y" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Good luck with the project! Keep posting pictures

Re: 1970 datsun 1600 build thread
Finally after al this time i have almost finished my shopping list. luckly today i got most of them for dirt cheap.
1) exhaust headers
2) driveshaft
3) fuel pump
4) old stereo with panel
5) and the best of all a pair of Dellorto carbs. But i'm missing the manifold.
All i paid was $100 for all the parts.
Any one know a place that explains how to tunne and replace all the gaskets?

Great to see another TX roadster!
Keep your eye out for a Cannon manifold for your carbs. They pop up sometimes on Ebay.
Which gaskets are you replacing? Usually you can do the easy ones without any instructions. But sooner or later you should buy the Datsun Roadster Book by Scott Sheeler - it has step by step instructions for most things.
Cheers
James

Yes, welcome Julio.
Your car dealing sounds like our old neighbor across the street. He's 19 now but has bought more cars in his life than I have (and I'm over 50). He keeps trading up each time and is currently driving a 2000 or so Malibu that's paid for. I think he paid around $ 1200 for his first car or may have even gotten the first car for free and ended up selling it for $ 1200, can't remember which.

Re: 1970 datsun 1600 build thread
Sorry for the late reply. So two days ago i took apart the carbs, and to my luck all the gaskets look new. None of them got torn even thou one was quite well stuck. So no more need of new gaskets!!!!

Re: 1970 datsun 1600 build thread
This are the pictures i took today of the progress. I know that the car looks really unsafe cause it's siting on bricks. I also know that the fenders are getting scratched, but that's the only way to keep the car in the air. You all may also see that the floorboards got fixed the same way the fenders got fixed.
