Colin Chapman of Lotus fame said to get more power add lightness. He also said that if it didn’t break at the checkered flag you over built it! I don’t think his theory changed much when he built his street cars

Lightweight is the right weight. According to the Bob Sharp Comp prep manual, for every 15 lbs removed, you gain 1 hp on a 2L (17 lbs +1 hp for a 1600, 19lbs for a 1500.)
It helps with the handling, and with the braking as well.

Not all weight is created equal in a car. Rotating mass such as flywheel and tires and wheels are more effective if lost. Unsprung weight such as tires and wheels also are better to remove.
