68-70 Console Lock

Post by 70-1600 »

I'm refurbishing my center console ('70 high windshield). The torsion spring on the console lock is broken, so the latch won't return and secure the console lid.

Anyone have a center console lock they are willing to donate...? Or possibly sell at a reasonable price...? I have the trim ring and latches to hold it in place. Bonus points if a key comes with it! :-)

TIA!!

Mine needs refreshing. Would hope someone has a source or replacement spring. Maybe it could be replicated with piano wire from a hobby shop.

I poked around the web pretty extensively for a double arm torsion spring that could be a replacement. Very little luck. I’ll be watching eBay every few days to see if something pops up. The other items on the console are done - painted the metal pieces, installed the cover parts from Dean. Happy with the results so far.

Thanks to tjp for help in getting a replacement lock, with a good torsion spring! Should have this little project wrapped up soon. The cover pieces will take some finagling to work around installing into the car; using them make the overall size fit quite snug up against the radio console and rear shelf. It also makes the shift plate challenging to adapt on to the top of the "thicker" rails of the console. It's a great feeling to tackle things one at a time....it's a marathon, not a sprint. Almost there on this step!

I made my own spring this weekend. I'll document the steps and get them posted with photos. It came out really well and I feel like it's going to last.

Good Roadster Karma today on the console lock. My door key (which works on my trunk lock and is supposed to fit the console lock as well) did NOT fit my old lock. I think because the existing console (and lock) was something I picked up a few years back as a replacement for my overly damaged original console (which I tossed out). The lock Tim (tjp) dug up and sold to me DID fit my existing door key style, but the key wouldn't operate the tumblers in the lock. I really wanted my existing door key to work with Tim's lock, and not have a third key. So, between the two locks I was able to harvest two pins from the old lock and put them into the replacement from Tim to get all 5 pins operating with my existing key. Success!

My key and Tim's lock...

Viola! Key fits AND operates Tim's donor lock!

To "pay it forward", I'm willing to donate my old lock (with the broken torsion spring) to anyone in need, and with the skills to replace the torsion spring.
