Looking for good paint & body shop in SoCal

Post by etroxel »

Hi all,

Third time will be the charm, right? I’ve just received my car back from a body shop (again) where the workers all walked out and left the owner having to shut down. My car was mid body work, half disassembled, etc.

I am looking for a shop to pick up the pieces and finish the job. It’s probably 70% done with the body work and then it needs paint.

I’m in Claremont in SoCal. Anywhere within 50 miles will work if you have a recommendation.

Thanks so much!

That is an UGLY situation. No body shop worth talking about is going to want to take on a half done project, without starting over. Because they are going to be stuck responsible for whatever is under what is done..

Do yourself a favor, and take lots of pictures, and go to Gongora's Body and Paint on Holt in Pomona. Talk to Dave, and tell him I (Mike) sent you.

He and his crew (now) know Datsun roadsters. And he will be fair with what you have. He bills time and materials for restoration work, as opposed to insurance work. He will not give you an estimate. He will instead bill you as progress happens, and they deal with what they find. If the work was really done, and done right, he will not bill you for that either.. Like I said, he is fair.

But having watched this process several times now, I can COMPLETELY understand where he is coming from now, and after what happened to Kevin's car after insurance fixed it at another shop (Which was later "sold" and renamed) and the paint failed before it was even assembled, I completely get why good shops are so reluctant to touch someone else's work..

Vehicle: 1963 SPL 310, (Single Carb) Been in my family since purchased in 1963.
I also need suggestions for paint and body shops in Southern Calif. I live in Glendale. My vehicle is in good condition but the front fenders are rusted where the 2 bolts hold the fenders to the body just ahead of the doors. Need a body shop that knows how to fix this problem right. I see the suggestion in Pomona but would prefer a body shop nearer the San Fernando Valley or San Gabriel Valley. Any recommendations?

I also live in Glendale. He painted my hood scoop last year. If you speak to him, I am sure he will remember painting my Datsun.

Howard, Can you elaborate? Did he shoot your scoop area to blend with rest of hood? Or did he shoot the entire hood ?

He painted the entire hood. The scoop had some imperfections which he repaired.
