How to remove door handles on '69?

Post by GoldHawg »

I wanted to remove my door handles to send in for rechroming, and after removing the two nuts that hold it in, its only connected by the rod that goes down to the door. I'm afraid of breaking the little tab that holds it. Most of these you just put a screwdriver in-between and pry it apart. Is that the case here, and will the plastic thing on the end come off w/o breaking or is there some trick I need to be aware of? Thanks!

From what I remember you just push the metal rod out of the plastic thing.
I remember when no one wanted the 1500s......

Like datsun1500, I too was thinking that when I did mine it was nothing but an interference fit. You never know about 50 year old plastic parts, so be gentle and spray a lubricant on it before you start.

I sprayed it down and popped it out. Once out I could see it was one plastic piece, with lube it came out w/o damaging. Thanks.

FYI, you may find buying new ones cheaper than re-chroming...

I think they might be. But I've heard that with the taillights at least that the quality would be better with rechroming the originals than with buying the new ones.

Z handles look pretty good to me. Pic has plastic over the handle in shot:

Agree on rechroming tail lights, if you get a good rechrome.
