The Delrin (and rubber) shifter bushings will sit lower in the housing when tightened with the lower nut, the aluminum bushings not so much, but in either case, as long as the lower nut is tight, the shifter motion will be more direct and precise.

More precisely, shifter bushings are compressed axially and drawn towards each other within the tailshaft/shift housing as you tighten the bottom nut.

OEM rubber bushings are very compliant and will tighten deep into the housing, especially if old and previously compressed, while Delrin bushings compress less so, and Aluminum bushings not at all.

That said, the less compliant the bushing, the more precise the shifter motion.

I got the Delrin bushing in and it did tighten up well.
I do have play in the rest of the linkage though. The pin that goes through the shift housing and selector arm is pretty loose. All I can think is to shim up the gaps a bit. I’m sure all of the parts are just worn at this point.

You need 'some' play, but the solution may be to use a slightly larger diameter link pin.
