In the years since 2008 when I first posted this "Cool License Plates?" topic, it has been great to see all the creative ideas to pay tribute to our cool cars. The combinations of alpha-numeric identifiers have hopefully provided people in other states some opportunities to get a cool license plate set of their own.

Something has changed for our car in the past year's time. I've surrendered the unrestricted, full price, "regular" license plates, for a type our state calls "Historic." The designation is supposed to have some kind of connection with the car's heritage, but in Maryland I see them on any old car or truck that meets the 25-year-or-older requirement.

It was a little melancholy for me to no longer have regular registration, because it acknowledges with great reluctance that I don't just pick up and go for a drive of a few hundred miles like when I was in college and visiting friends at other schools. Or going back to my old hometown for a 600 mile round trip to take in the annual summer surfing championship.

But me and the car have both gotten older, and the reality is now under 1,000 miles a year for my '69 1600.

Nonetheless, the tag still says DATSUN, as it has since I first grabbed it after a woman let her registration expire on a 240Z. And now the extra line that says "Historic" is a little more appealing to me than it was many years ago.

Actually, this is the tag I'm going to run on the car. It's an original 1967-8 Florida tag. These can be registered in Florida for the car ONLY if the first digit is correct for the county you live in and the second digit is correct for the weight class of the vehicle. The 5-digit number is random. The plate can not be restored or touched up and it has to be shipped off to the state capital DMV for certification. Since my car is '67.5 it's cool that it lists both 1967 and 1968 across the top.

Paul, I appreciated your reminiscing about your long history with the Roadster and the changes that have come. I too have had my car long term, it being the third car I owned (if you count my short experience with my first, a '72 Toyota PU). It was my daily driver in So Cal when I was in grad school in my mid 20's where we participated in the early Mt Shasta meets and the very first Solvang before coming back to Washington. Since then it has been a wonderful partner where I could endulge in my own efforts to improve or modify the car, and for cross state adventures to see long distance friends. The car is far more than "a car"... it's a family member and a friend. Its role has changed some over the years but the love for the car has only gotten stronger, and we look forward to more adventures and new places for as long as there's fuel in the tank and life in this Body!
