Looking for 2000 in moderate-good condition

Post by GGB »

Hello all,
I am new to this forum. What an impressive knowledge base here! I am in the market for a 2000. I would like to rebuild the engine (not my first engine rebuild but it would be my first Datsun rebuild). Pristine condition is not necessary, although interior is not something I am too keen on restoring so a decent interior would be preferred. Strictly mechanical and possibly body/paint. Checking the usual places (CL etc) but of course that comes with all the usual pitfalls. This seems like an upstanding group. Any leads would be most appreciated. Thank you!

Curious, what do you anticipate the engine rebuild to cost, assuming you are doing all the work yourself?

Hi theunz,
I suppose that will depend on be the condition of the engine that I receive. I don't really have a budget for the rebuild...I will do the work so it will be mostly parts. I suppose it will take what it takes :)

The reason I ask is because most people are a little set back when they discover that it takes $5,000 or so to do a proper rebuild on a U20. Buying a car with a solid engine will let you spend your money elsewhere. Good luck with your search, and remember the old adage “buy the best car you can afford” it will be cheaper in the long run. Once you get one and drive it you’ll find it’s money well spent.

theunz, thank you very much for the advice and the realistic price tag. That was higher than I had imagined, but it makes sense. I will keep it in mind as search for right fit. Thanks again.

What's your budget and definition of moderate-good, and is numbers matching a requirement?

Hi rwmann,
Ballpark of 10k...matching numbers is not a requirement. My definition of moderate-good is evolving but, I'm open to advice- suggestions from any of the veterans here. Thanks!

OK, $10k, plus how much sweat equity ($5k U20 overhaul, $3-4k Solex setup, Datsun Comp parts?) and additional cash to get you to good-plus, great-minus, or some version of restored, over what period of time, or $20k and put the final $5k of detail parts in relatively quickly? These are the questions we all ask ourselves... some of us beginning in the 1970s.

It's not a difficult engine to rebuild but depending on what you do it can get up there in cost as others have mentioned (hone vs. overbore, new valves, new pumps, etc.) I have rebuilt a few and tracked the spending on my cost sheet (unfortunately, I haven't added new cost to my website since 2016 because I'm afraid of my wife). With that said, I did track the builds and the parts and the vendors have really increased quality aftermarket parts and the available stock of NOS seems to still be there for certain items so the cost of rebuilding the U20 did come down from the 1st one I did. You can't fail with the best car deal as there are parts on the car that make engine parts look cheap. Have fun and enjoy the search!

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. I suppose all of the variables in cost are dependent on the condition of the engine I end up with and how fastidious I want to get. Cheers!
