Alternator

Post by Tonymig »

Has anyone ever changed the alternator away from under carbs to other side. Seems like a good spot for it. I had to remove the shroud and radiator to remove alternator from under the carb area.

Welcome Tonymig... the early cars came with the alt on the passenger side. A kit is available to move it so everything lines up correctly.

What is the advantage to moving it to the pass. side? Is it just that it's easier to get to, or more room so you can install a larger alt?

Been curious about this for awhile.

Thanks

Puts it to the cool side of the engine away from exhaust heat and frees up space by lower radiator hose access. The Alt on passenger side makes it easier to maintain as well. GM Alt conversions are very popular too deleting the oem regulator and it’s very cost efficient.

My reason for asking the original question is exactly the same response as nismou20 . Thanks for the help. Where would you get a conversion kit for the brackets to put alternator on passenger side?

If you haven't yet, look in the tech wiki under electrical. There is some good information there. I made the swap and am very happy with it.

Simon (2man) has one of our kits for sale on his thread for a great price. You can't build it for that cost. We can supply them anytime, but thought I'd help him out. These are nice kits, installs in 10-15mins.
