Re: What did you DO to or FOR your Datsun today?(Roadsters o
My dad was off this morning so he picked up all the hardware for the frame, suspension, etc from Fastenal. They had to order one of the sizes of nylock nuts for me, but got the whole setup! I sent them the list of what came in the hardware pack that is no longer available. Going to be nice to use brand new hardware when it comes to putting things back together.

@ tim
Talked to the machinist. Because the head (and block?) has/have been cut so much, the push rods are now too long. One step forward, two steps back. Hopefully have a fix for this already.
could you perhaps shim the rocker towers a bit??

Re: What did you DO to or FOR your Datsun today?(Roadsters o
If you look at a set of Ford "Y" block lifters, Iskendrian # 302H they may be a help, if you need to play with them and machine them to length they are cheaper and easier to find than Roadster. On the same note, there is probably a cut to length pushrod avail from Crane or Isky if you have the dimensionstputland wrote: Talked to the machinist. I think moving the rocker shaft up would screw up the geometry.

The Bob Sharp manual shows how to make custom length pushrods. Not a huge deal.

"Tried" to paint the recessed letters on my freshly chromed Heater, Switch and Air control panels.
Well, 1 out of 3 ain't bad I guess!
Unfortunately the depth of the recessed letters is less than a bee's dik and the paint just washes out when I try to clean up the excess
I'm thinking I may have to re punch the letters to get some sort of definition of them.
Anyone been here before and have any tips?

I seem to recall something about using a soft chalk (like tailor's chalk) and then putting 'clear' on them afterwards.

I'll have to take some pictures and try it again.tputland wrote:I'd say start a new thread if you can do some sort of write up. I for one have several early gauges I got dirt cheap in hopes of restoring them.bikermike wrote:Yes, Pls share more details when you have a chance. Thanks.tputland wrote:How did you get it apart? This seems to be an ongoing subject of interest for just about everyone. I'd love to be able to do this myself.
The hardest part is having the patience when prying the cover off with a small flat head screwdriver and a jewelers screwdriver.
The spare came apart easily as the gasket holding the glass to the gauge fell apart. I haven't looked in to where to find new material but with all the various gauges out there somebody should have something that will work.
The other gauge that I took from my car has an "Atlantic Coast Speedometer Service" sticker on it and appears to have been apart at some point in the past. It took me about twenty minutes work with two screwdrivers to get the gauge front off. It came apart intact with the gasket and glass remaining attached to the chrome ring front of the meter.
With the guts exposed it was relatively simple to get the rest of it apart. Make sure you don't loose any screws and take lots of pictures during disassembly and pay attention of the position of both counter wheels.
It should be noted that I found shim washers under the magnetic drive and they're may be several there.
I ended up using the drive from the spare in the original gauge.
The drive in the original gauge is binding and not allowing the needle to return to the zero position.
I haven't figured out how to fix it yet but I suspect that the housing holding the drive spring over the magnetic drive is warped. That or I think there needs to be more or less shim washers under the drive.

That's another one of the few systems on our cars that I personally would leave to experts. I'm not bold enough to tackle the gauges on my own. Nice work - I think - let us know when you get it back together!

A third fill on my doors, which are now ready for surfacer. Later today. Strip the rear deck and hood . Question, how does the chrome trim come off the hood at air inlet? Thanks.
