Effective today 9/06/2007-Gary is stopping production of his EI distributors for personal reasons.
Original information: Gary has been making EI Dizzys for our roadster for awhile now. I have bought four of them including one for my Z car. They are easy to install with excellent instructions. I love the fact that I no longer have to worry about points burning out and needing replacing. Besides the fact that the points we get today are pretty much crap to begin with. Many others have bought and installed Gary's EI dizzys as well. They have had nothing but good things to say about them. With that said, read on, and Gary will tell his own story. Thanks Gary for taking the time and putting in the effort to make these dizzys.
If you want to improve the reliability and reduce the maintenance of your original equipment distributor, a way to do it is to upgrade to a more modern Nissan electronic ignition (EI) distributor. With this upgrade, there will never be a need to adjust or replace points again. Engine performance will improve because points problems will be non-existent. After setting the timing, it remains unchanged and will never need adjustment. It's a completely self-contained distributor with a simple 2 wire hook-up to the roadster ignition system. It’s really more than just a distributor. It’s a complete electronic ignition system that is contained with this EI distributor because it has its ignition module attached to the distributor housing. This makes for a very simple and clean installation. There’s no need to drill holes or mount anything else that wasn’t already there.
With the diminishing availability of roadster parts, there's the added advantage of having a later Nissan distributor for which parts will be available for many years ahead. It has a larger diameter cap, which provides more space between the spark plug terminals. This is preferred over the roadster distributor because it is less likely to crossfire or arc between plug terminals. This is especially important when using an aftermarket high-energy ignition system. This distributor conversion has an advantage over the popular Pertronix® Ignitor, which is a solid state ignition trigger that also eliminates points. The Pertronix Ignitor, however, must operate at a lower voltage with the ballast resistor and the original coil. This EI distributor feeds twice the voltage to the ignition coil as compared to points or a Pertronix Ignitor. Additionally, the electrical resistance is much lower with the EI system, allowing much more current and hence, more power to the coil. More power to the coil means more power out of the coil to your spark plugs. The stronger spark allows for a wider spark plug gap and less misfiring. With this distributor and 12 volt coil alone, you will be able to widen your spark plug gap to 0.039”-0.043”. The spark plug gap for the original ignition system is 0.027" - 0.031". There have been numerous reports that this EI distributor system provides much easier starting, smoother running, and general improved performance, especially at higher rpms.
The Nissan electronic distributors that I build these conversions from are very well made with very high quality components made by Hitachi for Nissan, with one major exception, which I've remedied. With the original Hitachi design, the vacuum breaker plate has a plastic bearing cage, which with age, will break apart. When this cage fails, the ball bearings can fall out and this will cause many problems. It will prevent the vacuum advance mechanism from working at all, and can also lead to internal damage to the distributor. I fabricate new bearing cages of Nylatron™ to replace the plastic cage Nissan used. The Nylatron™ cage will last forever, so the only weakness in Nissan's design is eliminated with this conversion. The mechanical advance mechanism is modified to match the desired 15 degrees of crank advance, which is identical to the pre-emissions roadster distributor. This distributor has been completely disassembled, cleaned, and inspected for wear or damage. Any worn or damaged components have been replaced with new Nissan parts. The re-assembly is performed with quality checks to ensure conformance to required dimensions and tolerances. Synthetic grease is used to guarantee long trouble-free life. All electrical components are tested.
It comes complete with the ignition module (attached to the side of the distributor housing), tachometer pinion, drive coupling, and vacuum advance controller. It also includes a wiring harness to connect the module to your coil. Also provided is a wire with connectors to easily bypass the ballast resistor. Included are a new distributor cap and rotor. It comes with installation instructions, troubleshooting guide, and a parts list with a distributor drawing and wiring schematic. This distributor is extremely easy to install and the instructions provide a method of setting the timing without a timing light or any other electrical device.
A 12 volt EI coil is required with this distributor. There are several options, which include an OE type 12 volt coil, or one of several high output aftermarket coils for EI systems. I can provide recommendations on coil options at your request. The distributor also works well with aftermarket capacitive discharge ignition systems.
If your roadster does not use vacuum advance, such as the Solex equipped roadsters, I will remove the vacuum controller from the EI distributor, plug the hole, and install a spacer and screw in the vacuum breaker plate to lock it down (prevents timing flutter). It looks clean and works well.
I can usually accommodate any special requests for advance characteristics because I build them to order.
Terms of SaleThe price for the electronic distributor is as follows: For distributors with vacuum advance, such as most SU carburetor 1600’s and 2000’s, the price is $269 plus $14 shipping and a refundable $25 core charge for your original roadster distributor. For distributors without vacuum advance, such as Solex U20’s, etc., the price is $229 plus $14 shipping and a refundable $25 core charge for your original roadster distributor. I will accept a personal check, money order, Paypal (email gboone70@yahoo.com which is a premier account and accepts credit cards. If you send a spare roadster distributor with your payment, ignore the $25 core charge. I recommend that you not remove your distributor until you have the EI distributor to install. If you do remove your distributor to send as a core with your payment, make a note of what direction the rotor was pointing before removing it. Do not send the cast iron base with a distributor core. The reason I need to charge the $25 core is that if I don’t get your original roadster distributor or your spare, I have to buy them for about $25 each in order to build more EI units. However, it is your option to keep your original distributor.
I will provide my phone # if you would like more info. Just send me an email message to gboone70@yahoo.com and I'll reply. I offer a money back satisfaction guarantee and a one year warranty. To date, there are over 277 EI roadster distributors out there that I’ve built and only one return.
