Stock fuel tank with FI??

I'm about to change my fuel tank over to fuel injection and I'm looking for a simple and effective way to do so. Have any of you used a sump kit like this and an inline fuel pump?
Thanks,
jEFF
BTW it is a miata swap.

Re: Stock fuel tank with FI??
When i did my efi swap on my U20 i sent out the stock tank and had a bowl type of set up put around the drain hole area.
I then carefully tap the drain hole to put in a 90 degree fitting then send it to the fuel pump mounted between the rear end and tank as low as possible.
This is what was done on last sr20det swap i did also.

Re: Stock fuel tank with FI??
I use a two pump system. Low pressure electric to a surge tank with return and gravity feed to a bosch high pressure pump with the return from the high pressure "T"ed into the gravity line.
I have seen several cars with the drain plug taped and the fuel pump mounted between the tank and the axle.
Searching the web I found this idea on a cheap surge tank with pump.

Re: Stock fuel tank with FI??
After trying several different versions of external sump pumps on Datsun 510 fuel tanks, we finally went to internal fuel pumps and ever looked back! External pumps are noisy, add way too much un-neccessary plumbing, and rob space from the under side of the car. An internal pump is quiet, takes no extra room and will suck every last drop of fuel out of the tank (if used with the internal catch can!)
On the roadsters we use a fuel pump and catch can out an Honda Civic or Acura Integra.

We process the attachment ring, internal catch can, and the fuel pump out of the Civic tank.
The roadster fuel tank is then professionally cleaned to get any trace of gasoline out of it, and the internal catch can is welded into the tank and a new top plate is made to house the sender and attachment ring. The tanks are then sent out to a local radiator shop to have them seam sealed with silver solder.
Be VERY wary about welding or cutting on a fuel tank that has had gasoline in it. Explosions from modifying fuel tanks is common-- have it professionally cleaned before attempting any fabrication, and if you are at all uncomfortable with that process, take it to a professional and let them do it!
All of our SR converted cars run this setup, they are quiet and reliable. If you are running a turbo car, replacement high-output pumps for the Honda fuel pump chassis are easily obtainable and are a 100% bolt in. We won't do it any other way!

Re: Stock fuel tank with FI??
I have done it both ways, surge tank and in tank conversion (copied Spriso's exactly) The surge tank setup is easier fabrication wise but can be messy if not well thought out and does take up a fair bit of space. I much prefer the intank setup, but there is nothing really wrong with the surge tank setup. I did do one EFI swap with just an external pump off the stock supply line (Dodge Colt). Not good when the tank gets low due to fuel slosh away from the pickup. Causes momentary hesitation until fuel pressure builds. Needless to say, it now has an intank pump and problem solved.

It would seem to me that that the effort and cost are about the same for in-tank Honda vs. the Summit sump.
In which case, the vast superiority of the in-tank Honda approach would be the winner for me. Oh, wait, it was.
I love my in-tank Honda pump. I've taken it up and down crazy hills on the Eastside of LA just to test it out!
I've even had dreams about it working on bizarre inclines. My dreams are truly lame.

Michael--
Are there any particular years fuel pumps that are better to get? Does the catch can remove easily? What I'm wondering is should one just buy the whole tank and take it home to remove, or is it easy once the tank is down to remove it there at the pick and pull junkyard?
thx!

Any Civic or Integra from 1990-2004 will have what you need.Michael--

Buy the whole tank and bring it home, you won't be able to process what you need from the yard. You need to prep the tank before taking a saw or tin snips to it...
I have photos that I can post of the process.

Re: Stock fuel tank with FI??
+1 for the Spriso solution. I run the Walbro 255 LPH high pressure pump in the Honda catch can mounted inside the stock tank.
Works flawlessly; I am happy with it.
It is not exactly easy, but I would not do it any other way.

Re: Stock fuel tank with FI??
As with most projects around my home... A week or so away turned into 7 months! I have completed the efi conversion on my 69 2000 tank. I used the "catch can" out of a 1991 Civic and fuel pump and sending unit from a 1997 Civic. All in all I probably have 8-10 hours in the tank. Now that I've done it once, I could probably replicate the job and make less mistakes in half the time.Lowdown wrote:Thanks for all of your comments!
