Fabrication is going to be required no matter what engine swap you do-- there is no getting around it. If you don't want to do any fabrication, put the tired U20 or R16 back in there...
The stock steering rod is not a problem when doing an SR20DET swap into a Datsun roadster however.
There are two ways you can mount the turbo, either a top mount (which is easier), or a bottom mount (harder).
Both have their drawbacks, a top mount will tend to cook the paint on the hood, and master cylinder, a bottom mount will be harder to stuff into the already-too-small space.
TR went the traditional route with his conversion, and went with a bottom mount turbo, as did I with the conversion that I am doing for a customer right now.
Dave did a top mount with his conversion, and it looks great too.
