Checking Gauges...

Hi Folks,

Still digging into those 2 roadsters to figure out what I really have. Has any developed methods for checking to see if the guages are functioning properly? I'm sure I could figure it out with a drill motor and a multimeter.. but I thought someone here might have tackled this before.

Thanks!

Matt

I think the tach cable turns at 1/4 of the engine speed, the rotation is the same as the needle sweep.

I'm not sure about the speedo, but if it moves at all, you have a pretty good chance that it is ok, just make sure to start slowly!

As for the rest of the gauges, you'll need to know if the senders (and gauge voltage regulator for fuel and water temp) are any good as well...

Water temp can be confirmed by putting the sender in a pan of water, make sure the shell of the sender is grounded, put 12VDC to the gauge voltage regulator, connect the other end to the gauge, the other wire from the gauge directly to the sender. Water that has just begun to boil taken to the garage should give ~210 degrees on the gauge.

Oil pressure can be checked by mating the sender to a bicycle pump or air hose with a gauge to reference from. Go very easy, you don't want to overpressure. Once again, ground the threaded region, 12VDC to the gauge, other line to the sender...

Clocks don't work, but 12VDC to the wire and ground the chassis.

You'll know if the fuel works when you add some gas to the tank...

The amp draw is obvious, too...

I'm thinking of low windshield gauges, but the same applies to high windshield ones-Except I do not remember if they utilize the gauge voltage regulator...

Good Luck! TR
