Steering Wheel Nut - Size and Thread????

I'm having some trouble figuring out my steering wheel nut. I did not have one on the car. The PO obviously sold the horn button assembly and retaining nut. My thread gauge says it's 5/8 X 18. That nut won't work. Got a 16mm X 1.50, that won't work either. The treads seem finer than that. But I can't find a thread on my thread chart that fit. The 18 is the closest. Is this a custom thread???

Interesting.....did some searching here and other Datsun forums. Appears that all (pre-'84 anyway) Datsuns uses the same steering column spline size, but no one mentions what that size is.

Do you want to know what size socket fits the nut?
I don't have a caliper to measure the thread

This brings up the usual cause of the problem...The nut behind the wheel! :D
I'll see if I have one and PM you. I think it's in Junk box "d"

Your question about the steering wheel nut reminded me to collect all of my steering column parts since they SHOULD be going back in in the near future. I measured the thread pitches and found that the nut in question appears to be a 16mm x 1.5 thread. That thread converts to 16.933 TPI which explains why my 16 TPI gauge was too coarse while the 18 TPI was too fine. The "stud" does measure almost exactly 5/8" however. BUT, I could not find a wrench with an acceptable fit: 22mm and 7/8" too loose, 21mm and 13/16" wouldn't go on. I checked the British Standard Fine specs, but no go.

I looked in the garage, no luck, and it's a mess in there!! I checked Z car vendors, no listings. Factory part # is 48405-30800...Never know, it might be available. Nissanparts, com lists it, but that is not always accurate. Nissan is famous for using the same part for years. Trivia..Dodge only has 1 part number for a clutch pilot bushing from 1928 up into at least the late 80's for their USA built engines.

If no luck with nissan #, maybe looka t 510 sites?
Good luck

When I chased my steering column threads I used a 5/8 by 18 die.

Is it possible there was a change in thread sizes because of a change in parts suppliers to Nissan? They did mix SAE and metric on my late car, and since my car's nut is 16mm x 1.5, perhaps a change did occurred somewhere along the line.

The 5/8 x 18 at least wants to start. The 16mm x 1.5 does not even want to start.

Collapsible column was one change, about the same time the engine went metric, so that's plausible.

Sorry to bump a nearly decade old thread (about threads), but I've got the same question and can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Much of my Roadster came in boxes, but despite many random nuts & bolts - that particular nut is nowhere to be found.

I've bought both sizes mentioned in this thread (5/8 x 18 & M16x1.5) but neither works on my '67 1600, while they both almost seem to start they stop and I'm scared I'll start cross-threading the steering column.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've checked a few of the vendors...but haven't quite worked anything out there yet (not to mention, the one site I see it listed, my minimum shipping cost will be $30+)...

If anyone can confirm size/thread, that'd be great. Or if anyone has a spare from a parts car or something?

If you can't find the answer here, you can contact 2 eBay sellers who specialize in Roadsters. One of them will have it for your car.

Jim, eBay seller id: mrclassicss
Scott, eBay seller id: mcboulevard
or Ross at Sports Imports listed here on the vendor page

Ah, you know I think I forgot about Ross somehow. I've contacted some others who were recommended, but I forgot about Ross, even though I've purchased from him before. Thanks for the reminder! If he doesn't have one, I'll check with the eBay guys.

Thanks!
