67 1600 tach / spedo issues

The tach and spedo on my 1967 1600 are way off. Both show about 1/2 of the actual rpm / speed. Not sure if it's the connection to the distributor shaft / trans, cable or the gauges themselves. I would hate to buy gauges and have the problem persist. Can they be rebuilt? If so, by who? Any insight would be apreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Bruce,

Kind of strange that both the tach and speedo went out together so I'm guessing the problem is elsewhere but if you'd like to be sure then you can send them to me and I will be happy to check them out at no charge. (And, yes they can be re-built to look and run like new.)

Both were out when I bought the car. Not sure if they went at the same time. What is typical cost to rebuild?

Speedo and tach's are $150.00 each and the overhaul includes a new dial, new glass, and a fresh chrome bezel. You said your car was a 67 but I'm not sure if you meant 67.5 or an early 67 so here are some before and after pics of both.

In that case, here's some more "hateraide" for you! I know you have a passion for early cars too Sid, so here's a picture of an early set of right hand drive instruments that we did for a guy in Japan last year. He couldn't decide if he was going to use MPH or KMH so we did one of each.

Jon, you are truly an evil man....

One day I will get you to do 2 sets of 1500 gauges and a set of 67.5 2000 gauges....

STOP IT! STOP IT RIGHT NOW! I'm gonna be buying stuff forever and -NEVER- get on the road.

Seriously, what's the turnaround time?

NICE!!! I'll pull them tonight and get them to you. It's an early 67 with chrome rings. Can you get the clock going also? What's your typical turn around time?

Thanks for all of the kudo's on the gauges.... Aircraft instruments are what pays the bills but the Roadster bug is what keeps me sane so a little cross breeding was inevitable. :smt002 It takes about 2 weeks to get the dials back from the screeners and then about two weeks to finish the job so a total turn time of about one month is the norm. We do overhaul the clocks and we install brand new plexy bezel's while we're at it. (Those 40 year old plastic lenses tend to look a bit ragged) We also have gauges in house and can offer exchanges for those who want to keep the down time to a minimum?

Thanks again

Jon,

You do absolutely beautiful work! Hence my next question, Do you refurbish later model speedos and tachs? And then I've had this long long desire to have them white faced, do you do this kind of custom work or know of anyone that does? I thought my tan on red car would look nice with stock white faces. Thanks Tom,

Yes, we do the later gauges too and since we already have the screens they can be done in any color combo you like? You may want to photo shop a few color combo's before deciding because some may sound good in theory but turn out to look terrible once in the car.

Hope this helps?

Jon

I'll throw in a little more praise for Jon's work.

He's done two sets of gauges for me over the years -one set for the 67.5 2000 that he now owns and the set (pictured above) that he did for my 66 1600. They are without a doubt the best work you can get for the money (and very reasonably priced when you consider the work that goes into them).

They approach works of art when you see them in person and Jon takes complete pride in his work.

Highly recommended.
