1600 won't idle

Post by bmccarthy67 »

My 1600 won't idle. It will run like a scalded cat as long as I'm on the gas pedal, but as soon as I lift my foot the car will studder and die. I don't know where to start. [/b]

Buddy,

Just don't stop!

Did it just start all of a sudden? If so, were there any previous symptoms? If not, try this. Disconnect the vacuum advance and start the engine. Set the idle so that you can keep it running. Check the timing - it is likely way off. Back if off a bit and readjust the idle to the lowest speed you can keep it running at. Keep doing this until you get a reasonably slow idle and timing that is about right.

Let me know if that helps. Best of luck!

Sid, yes I guess I had a pretty major change. I had asked for advice before on the backfiring thru the carbs, ordered new needles and had a local shop Asian automotive put on a new exhaust system. The mechanic said he set the car to run "rich" because I didn't have choke cables on and my gas was old and crappy. I put in a new gas tank, fuel filter, and a set of choke cables and now this was my end result. I didn't think the new gas would matter, and I wasn't even using the choke to start the car. I will start were you said and go from there. :?

Buddy,

Before you do anything, disconnect the chokes. I suspect that they may be stuck on - that would explain the situation.
