My "other" datsuns.

Post by 1600dave »

I've only just acquired a fairlady, but have had Datsuns for over 25 years.

My first car was a 510, second car was a 510, and my 4th car was a 610. All three are still in the shed :D

Anyway, my first one has fallen into a rusty, incomplete mess since it was taken off the road 15 years ago. The only reason I'm hanging onto it is the sentimental value  Its in under there somewhere :!:

The second 510 has recently become a track toy. Still running an L18 with SU's, I've been concentrating my efforts on braking and handling. Currently, it run 240K (C110) front struts and brakes, stock drums on the rear with 240Z finned alloy drums, a late model 7/8 dual master cylinder and competition linings all round. Suspension is Tokico Prodra-G "green" shocks all round, 900lb rear springs and unknown rate front springs. Front lower control arms have been lengthened, an offset strut top is fitted, it runs 4 degrees negative camber as a result of these mods. Interior is stripped out, running a race seat for the driver, unknown seat for any passenger silly enough to get in  , harnesses and a dash that sports a speedo, fuel and temp guages. Should fit a tacho one day :smt003

Its also just been treated to a new set of Toyo R888 tyres in 195/55/15

This pic is my favourite, taken at Australia's Datsun National meting at Phillip Island circuit in 2007.

The third car is my present project - a 1972 610 SSS coupe. I bought this a while back just to drive to work, but its been taken off the road for a full restoration. Its pretty rusty, so far I've spent over two years just on bodywork  . Plans for this one are to run an Eaton M45 supercharger from a Mini Cooper S on the original L18 motor, backed by a CA18 5 speed. EFI will be added to a custom inlet manifold, all controled by a haltech E6X ecu. I've slowly accumulated most of the parts to finish the job, its just taking forever as I'm doing all the work myself.

The pics below are just one of the rusted sections. Most of the shell was like this :(

All the rust has been cut out and replaced with hand-formed panels.

The car is being finished to "show" quality - even the underside will be detailed. Its currently been stripped back to bare metal and coated with POR15.

The last pic is the heart of the project - a nice, near-new Eaton M45 blower  . Water-to-air intercooler is off a Subaru RS turbo and fits nicely in front of the lefthand side strut tower.

Quite a stable! WOOT!

Post pics of the 610 project in this forum from time to time. OZ seems like it must be Datto heaven.
