Good Morning

Just a quick introduction before I get to my question. My father and I are just getting started on a restoration of what we believe is a 1968 2000 in his northwest indiana garage.

I'm hoping to supply the most elbow grease on the project so he'll let me keep it once we're done. He already has a '64 Corvette to play with.

Anyways...here's my question. We have one working car that is 100% road worthy with most likely only a clutch problem, and another bare bones parts cars. I wanted to get both cars into the registry and am trying to find the VIN's.

I know there's lots of instructions here, so I'll get specific. Is it on the top of the frame in the engine bay on the driver's or passenger's side? Also, is it in a location that is visible if you look straight down through the bay, even with the engine in the car? And if so, how accessible is it to clean off with the engine and everything still installed?

I already checked for the information plate under the hood, it is nowhere to be found. Although I've read that those aren't exactly accurate either.

Any help is greatly appreciated. My dad's out of town this weekend, so I'll be tackling some of the easier removals on Saturday and Sunday. Luckily we have a loft over the garage for storing all the parts as they come off.

Here is a picture of the frame location on the drivers side, for a SRL. The alternator has been moved to the right hand side of the motor and the windshield washer resevoir is not mounted.

There should also be a black metal plate all the way forward on the driver's side top of the dash. It is clearly visible as one peers through the windshield-outside looking in- from the carbs side of the motor. Sam

I'll take a look again, although I think I already checked here to no avail. That sounds like the same place they put VIN's on today's cars, am I right?

Yes it is. However it may be obscured by a dash pad or new dash cover. The way to determine if they were removed is to look for two black rivets about 2-4" apart. The VIN plate would have been mounted between them. Regards. Sam

A '68 does not have the VIN tag on the dash in the corner of the windshield. '69 and '70 do.

As a macro spotter's guide see if you've got side marker lights. No? And the dash has recessed guages like a Z-Car? Yep, probably a '68.

Thanks for all your help guys. With the help of a flashlight and some steel wool, the VIN is confirmed as a 1968 2000. SRL311-05160.

I still haven't gotten a chance to go the my grandma's garage to check on the worn down parts car yet, but 05160 will be the roadster coming back to life.
