Room for another nutbar?

Post by GeoffM »

New owner in Vancouver BC here. I've been lurking the boards for the last week now and since as of last night I'm officially a roadster owner I thought I would introduce myself because I'm hoping to rely on y'alls advice...heavily.

I purchased a '69 1600 from a long time owner. He bought the car in ~'75 and used it as a daily driver up to '89, when he decided to restore it. He then drove it regularly until '95, when it went into semi-storage.
Anyway, it's in good shape but needs to be refreshed. I'm sure the guys at Sports Imports and Rallye are more familliar with her than I am, I'm sure.
It came with a Snugtop HT, soft top in the box and lots of bits including a spare long block and head. The only real pressing issue is getting it to pass emmissions (fails on idle test). I'm gona go out on a limb and say it's carb related. . Also, there is a leak near the dist. haven't determined if its the tach cable and/or the brake distribution block.
I'll post pics when I can.

One question, is there still an active club in Vancouver anymore?

Roadster only? Not that I know of, but several very active Datsun clubs.

Oh, yeah....WELCOME! Sounds like you scored a good deal.

Welcome to the forum.
Your roadster looks to be an easy one for refreshing up.

If you find out that the oil leak is from the tach cable, take a look in the wiki tech FAQ section for the fix.
Its more than likely the tach housing oil seal is the problem.

Yeah, takes a week to get the seal and maybe 15 minutes to replace.

You coming to the Canby event in June?

Welcome to the forum.
You are in Vancouver, BC? Well Ray, as you may have noticed, is in Manitoba. What is that, a few thousand miles ? Nothing for a Canadian!
Invite him for a BBQ and I'll bet he'll come down to help

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

Good to know, I'm going to need all the help I can get. I was born in Winterpeg so we're probably related.
I already have the obligatory 'shifter boot' order into Ross so that I can start the process of picking his brain too . ;)

Do you know what it failed for, HC or CO?
You may want to start your emmission work, strangly enough, by DE-smoging the car. Running at TDC, probably with a sticky breaker plate, it may be better off at the 67 specs. If you need, I have a good "loaner" points distributor, non smog, you can borrow if you want to drop it in and try it. I have it here for rebuilding, but it's too nice to take apart, so it willstay intact until I really need the parts

If you haven't run a couple tanks of fuel through it yet the old gas can throw the emmissions right off the scale.

If you are dealing with worn leaky carbs, getting them to hold an adjustment is tough. Keith Allen is the carburetor guy, a complete set from him may just save alot of labor and trips back and forth for tests.

Hey Dave,
I totally missed your post, which is wierd as I spend all my 'surf' time here soaking in the nuances of roadster ownership.

I think we've figgured that I have a non smog engine. I've confirmed that this is the original engine that was rebuilt and returned but being Canadian I don't think it ever had a smogger. When the PO bought the car in '75 it didn't have a smogger ...so we assume it never did.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I've had a lengthy PM with Keith and I've thrown in a set of M-43 needles that are a bit girthier than the M-39's that the PO had installed. I have burnet most of the gas that was in the tank and I plan on taking her for a long boot before hitting the emmissions testing station (with a stop to pick up some methyl hydrate). I think I've got the carbs sorted, and a new battery to boot. All these issues like the carb setting and the nozzles sticking when the choke is disengagued and the dead battery are all issues that will go away when it gets driven on a regular basis.
It's too bad that the car wasn't on the road that much. It has 4 Pirelli's that look new as far as tread goes...only age has cracked the sidewalls.
Oh well...as I say, all the issues I have run into I can attribute to being penned-up in the garage....I plan on remedying that. :)

Hey Geoff, welcome!
I am a relatively new owner in Vancouver (well, Squamish) too - in fact I'm pretty sure I looked at your car (it was Brians right?) but I decided to buy a low windshield car instead. Congrats on the purchase - it was pretty tough to walk away from that car: good price, solid car and he seemed to have mountains of stuff that was going with it.
I havent heard of any "formal" roadster clubs in Vancouver - I think there are some informal groups of friends with roadsters though. The guy I bought my car from has 3 other roadsters and was talking about a Sunshine Coast car show / run that a lot of the roadster guys used to go to - not sure of the details though? I think theres a couple other owners on here from Vancouver too, Alp (I think?) and of course Ross (Sports Imports).
If you ever feel like shaking the car down with a run up to Squamish let me know...
Cheers.

Thanks for the replies,
Hey BE, were you in Maple Ridge last week? I spoke to a couple of friends that sighted a pale yellow low windshield in Pitt Meadows.

I also met a guy in MR who owns a 67.5 2000 solex car. (silver too).

I'll take you up on the run up to Squamish. We usually get up to Whistler a couple of weeks in the summer...but I don't know how I'm gonna get the mountain bikes and all the other gear into the Roadster. Oh yeah, forgot the kid too :) Maybe they can take the Tundra and I'll follow behind.....see ya at the brew pub!!

Hey Geoff, nope that wasn't me. I haven't been out to Maple Ridge since I bought the car from there 3 months ago. Either your friends are time-challenged and they saw it 3 months ago but thought it was last week (sounds like a lot of my friends!) or theres someone else with a pale yellow low windshield roadster. In which case they have extremely good taste.
Brewpub? Anytime! Love that place, just say the word and I'm there.
Cheers!
