Just saw a segment on the local news of a guy converting cars to 100% electric power. Could convert a car for $2,500 for a basic job, price goes up for more professional installs. Can go 50 - 80 miles per charge. Small aerodynamic cars are the best choice.

So, anyone ever think about making an electric roadster? I think this car would be a good candidate. The hardest part he says is fabricating the drive train. Or I should say, mounting the motor to the drive train. With gas prices soaring with no end in sight, it may be my next project.

Other option is Hybrids, matting R16/U20 with an electric motor, how?
I have this idea of modifying an electric motor that will fit into the starter mount to fly wheel. To run on electric motor only you will need to turn off your electric fuel pump and ignition, your motor will turn but you not burning any fuel. If you going high speed and need your gasoline motor to fire up, you just simply switch your fuel pump and ignition to on position …. So basically we have larger starter that propelling the car when going low speed, say 5-10mph or perhaps 15mph

I've seen it done on the Porsche 914's. 914's seem like the perfect candidate.

I did some measuring a number of years ago and determined that a compact and lightweight power train solution for the Roadster would be to mount an electric motor to an MR2 transaxle.

It would create a slight hump in the trunk, but would save space and weight over the usual approach of mounting the motor in the engine bay, joined to the stock transmission, drive shaft and rear axle.

I think the usual way to do it is to make an adaptor plate to mount the electric motor directly to the gearbox.

Our current provincial government has just announced they are moving to 0 emmissions cars and buildings ... in 2040 or so.

Got me thinking about what to do when/if it comes to re-powering the Raodster. So I sent an email to a place I found on line ... EV West. Seems they have kits for a few cars... and here is what he answered about the Roadster

"Thank you for the inquiry in regards to possibly converting your Datsun Roadster over to electric. We do have a few motor options that you could choose from but depending on what transmission you have you may have to come up with the design and have an adapter plate made for your vehicle. There is a company that has an adapter plate for the Nissan/ Datsun listed here http://www.canev.com/a5109.php If this would work for you we can order this for you with the kit. Our single motor kits start at 17k for parts while our dual kits start at 25k. Range is based on overall weight of the vehicle, motor choice, and number of batteries you can fit in your vehicle. Most of our smaller conversions such as the Beetle/ Porsche are getting anywhere between 100-130 miles on 26.5kW of energy. If you Google Plasma Boy Racing, you'll find John Wayland and his White Zombie electric 1200.
Those who have seen this car can attest to the engineering that's gone into it.
In short, it has a reworked electric forklift motor in the engine compartment with the battery and most of the electronics in the trunk. No transmission, the driveline couples directly to the motor.
Remember, dc motors are "instant full power" so he uses electronic controls to taylor the power delivery to whatever traction is available.
This car routinely destroys Corvettes, Mustangs and even Teslas at the drag strip. In addition, he can tailor the power delivery to give a decent range of 200 or more miles. He routinely drives the car to the races, has been at Blue Lake and Canby.
