I FIXED THE TRANNY!!!!!!!!!!!

Post by Guest »

Steve, Will, Sid, Mike.......and every person that took the time to read my problem.........I did it! I took the rear extention out again, made a mess with the grease, and started looking, thinking, and looking again. The gears are the way I thought they were, so I started moving them gently back and forth, and THERE! the reverse gear seemed too far in, so I put a piece of thin wood between the gear and the tranny's case, pull it just a bit, and it dissengaged easily and smoothly, unlocking the remaining gears as well.

When I was putting back the rear extention, I realized what happened....I pushed the reverse gear in while trying to slide the housing( it happened today twice, that's how I noticed). Now everything moves smoothly and the way it's supposed to. I took some pics of the way it should look when done right if anyone is interested in them.

Thanks again for your helpfull insights.

Good for you Jorge. Pat yourself on the back for that one. I do everything I can myself except for tranny's. Maybe someday? :?: Naaah! You are getting closer and developing a real appreciation of the inner workings of the "car".

Congratulations on getting it figured out and fixed!

Now for me to throw a wet towel in the ring before you button it all up and stick it back in the hole... Is the reverse supposed to be that moveable? I would pick the brains of a transmission expert. Better to find out now when it is fairly easy to fix than later - especially if it decides to self destruct while you are on a road trip - just out of cell phone range in the middle of nowhere....

Thanks for all the words of support! Oh! Sid: Once all the gears were dissengaged, the reverse only engages if the little pin or button in it is pressed down by the rod. But when I was putting the tail in, I kept pushing the rod and it was then "pressing the button" and since the rod itself was not in place yet, it was pushing the other gears as well...that's why it was locking still, because of the rod pushing all the gears in when installing it................does this make sense to you? Because I'm a mess putting my ideas in understandable words!

Tranny fix

Very good. It will be good to see another new car out and about soon. I have yet to mess with a tranny so I congratulate you in your work. I need to pull mine apart but I am afraid of what I will find.

OK, that makes sense. I misunderstood and thought that a gear that should be stationary on the shaft was moving - not a good thing....

Glad to hear it is going!
