Datsun Driving Weekend! Arcata, California August 22-25 2008

From the Datsun 510 list today-- all Datsun's are welcome!

Datsun Driving Weekend!

OK, this is plenty of time to get your car ready, get time off, get a hall pass if needed, and get your car running right for anyone that wants to go.

August 22 - 25, 2008 we'll be heading to Arcata, CA for a 4 day weekend of unbelievable coastal, canyon, hill, and forest driving. Full details are at http://datsun510.com including driving maps, places to stay, and places to eat. And the super awesome generic flyer is located at http://datsun510.com/photopost/showphot ... =&ppuser=4, which BTW, is an actual photo of Bald Hills Road and yes, we'll be on that very road during one of our drives.

What this IS NOT is a formal event that requires registration. There is no car show. There are no communal meals, other than if you want to use the locations I have set on the details and eat with me/us. There is no gymkhana or autocross. Basically, this is not a Shasta replacement.

What this IS is an unbelievable weekend with some truely amazing drives in one of the most beautiful places in the world. We'll be traversing the state parks of Del Norte County as well as Humboldt Bay. If you have ever read about Hwy 36, Hwy 299, or Hwy 96, you know exactly where we will be driving.

I'll be leading a caravan from SF. Bruce Palmer will be leading a caravan from Portland. Randy York will be leading a caravan from LA. If anyone is interested in heading down from WA, let Bruce know and you can join up with him.

What should you bring? Well, first of all, this is not a cheap weekend due to all the driving and the need to buy food on the various drives along with the lodging (the real cost). There is camping available in case you would rather do that. If you decide to camp, you will not regret it as there are quite a few places along the coast or in the parks that have camping. I would suggest looking at Patricks Point State Park if you want to camp:

Both Bruce and I calculate ~$800 for the weekend if you are either coming down from Portland or up from SF. Those traveling from WA or Los Angeles can add another nights hotel and gasoline unless they can bunk up with a friend. Make sure your car is in great running condition. There will be no follow vehicle. If you get a flat, people will probably stop. If your engine stops running, there is a good chance that unless you can quickly fix it, you will be hoping there is cell reception in the mountains and that AAA takes less than 6 hours to get to you. We have plenty of time before August '08 to take care of any issues, so use the list wisely if you need help working on your car to get it ready.

Email me with questions as time passes. I'll add Bruce's and Randy's route info as it becomes finalized.

Don't miss this opportunity. You may never experience roads and scenery like what this will offer. 62 degrees. Sunny. 4 MPH winds. And a sea of Datsun's running through the forests and along the coast.

Be there!

From the Bluebirds mailing list:

Random comments on the Arcata run

There could be more dread locks in Arcata than all of Jamaica, mon. We just rounded out the freak show...

Seriously, the locals were great. We were getting gas one morning in Arcata, and some lady at the next pump island in a big duallie pulling a horse trailer comes up and starts telling us about how her husband has five or six 510s in the back yard down in Kneeland, (wherever that is)... we got her number...

Met another dude at the motel in Arcata, ex-SCCA racer and hillclimber (he and Steve Epperly knew a lot of the same people). Has a B-210, Lotus Cortina, had an Elan. He offered garage space if we needed to work on our cars while we were there... we got his number...

Randomly met a young guy and his gal outside the dinner restaurant in Arcata. He has a 510 that hasn't been running for a while. He was so stoked to meet us! Said he used to go the UFO SoCal meets. He went home and bought a new battery and got his white 2-door running and met us for breakfast the next AM...

On the way up, after walking out to snap a few pics from the Golden Gate bridge view area, we came back to our cars and there's a couple of dudes snapping pics. Heard all about "I had one of these, it was all tricked out but I got rear ended at an intersection and the car was totaled..."

Shortly thereafter, heading north on 101 in Marin County, we got two thumbs up from the passenger in a spankin' new Aston Martin DB something-er-other...

Only one picture shows a Roadster ????

Nice looking '69 with a hardtop installed.

Great scenery. You need more drop tops.

Well it's a good start.

Subject: Arcata Run in-car vid clip

Here's a clip from last Sunday afternoon. We hit the full spectrum of roads, from billiard table smooth, to "wish I had the Safari suspension". This was one of the rougher ones. Audio's a bit muted, so turn up the volume.

Some fun, fast, smooth, uphill esses following Steve and Pam in the Triple SU 240Z:

Pam was getting motion sickness riding shotgun. Switching to the driver's seat cured that.

Slaloming though some big trees:

We passed through a few giant redwood groves with trees twice the diameter of those you see here. Truly awesome.

A dusty downhill run following Doug and Colleen in their VG30DE 510:

It wasn't all follow the leader. Here's a few passes:
