Transmission's striking rod assembly

Post by Guest »

I posted a plea for help regarding the striking rod/control arm refitting, but neither my part's names, nor my explanation were clear enough, so here it goes again:

I removed the rear extention cover of my Servo 4-speed so I could replace the gasket. Now, when I put the striking rod back in , the control arm seems stuck, and the main shaft can't be turned by hand either.
I never took apart the gears because the tranny was obviously replaced or rebuilt and shows no wear or dirt in it.

RE:4 Speed Dilema

Jorge,

I am not ignoring you I just do not have an answer for your. I have never torn into a tranny so am pretty much clueless. Here are a couple of pictures -one of the 4 speed case and another of the internal linkage. http://www.311s.org/PublicPics/4speedcase.gif tranny case and http://www.311s.org/PublicPics/4speedlink.gif internal linkage. Can you maybe be more specific with those? Hopefully someone will come to your rescue.

Good luck!!

Jorge-

If the main shaft won't turn, nor the input shaft from the engine, it sounds like maybe a forward and the reverse gears are both engaged, or maybe two forward gears are both engaged.

If it were me, I think I'd probably take a look at what I could see with the piece that you took off removed and see if I could figure out what does what when the shft lever is moved. Then see if I could make everything go back together like it should. It's been a while, but I took mine apart when it broke (many years ago) and it worked when I got done.

I get the feeling it isn't anything really broken, but maybe something is engaged when it shouldn't be.

Good luck!

Steve and Bucky:

Thanks for your replies, and for your input. I went back to the tranny, and spent some time figuring out the mechanism and "what does what". Bucky, you hit right on the nail! I actually had both gears (reverse and forward) engaged. The problem is solved now.......I'll just have to get a new gasket though!

Thanks again Steve and Bucky!

With what the "problem" turned out to be, it is a good thing the shaft didn't turn!

Bucky:

I hear you! Good thing that the transmission's mechanism is "stupid-mistake" proof!
