Does anyone know where to get the little pin that goes on the end of the speedometer and into the transmission. Is it a common part that you can find at a place like Autozone?

Sorry your description isn't working. Help me out here....
You aren't talking about the speedo cable....??? A 'pin' at the end of the cable?
I swapped over to electronic gauges a while back, and remember modifying a 'pin' of sorts, but can't remember how it fit in the assembly......
Picture?

Oh, that pin.
The one thats about 1" long and always falls out when you remove the speedo cable adapter at the tranny.
Napa has some listed under speedometer cable adapter key.
Maybe they have one that fits.

That NAPA part looks right on. I have one out of the car if you need dimensions.

yeah the dimensions would be a big help, thanks. I must of set it down somewhere when I took it out and now its probably gone forever in the garage somewhere.

I've got one around somewhere as well if dbrick can't find his. The NAPA picture shows the ridges on the pin both on the same side, the picture at datsunparts.com shows them on opposite sides. Not sure if it matters ?

Another thought, is your pin maybe in the transmisison ? In other words, instead of falling out somewhere, maybe it's just stuck in the other end ?

I'll check in the transmission, but i'm almost positive that I remember taking it out.

OK, it measures exactly 1 inch long, 3/16 diameter on the round, has a circlip at the center. The "keys" are on the same side and about 3/32 high and 5/16 long. If you were creative, you could make one with a 3/16 roll pin and a dremel.
I need to keep mine for the future, but a trip to a speedo shop should get it. The major thing is diameter of the round part and the length, as long as the key engages. There are only so many variations on the same part.
Definatly look in the trans, mine was so stuck in the angle drive by old grease, I didn't think it was removable.
I didn't realize you were so close... I go to Bangor (I hardley even know her!) for the engine and tractor show. Are you going to make it to New York for the free beer, I mean car show?

Thanks, those dimensions should be a big help in finding a replacement. Yeah, I plan on going to New York with a couple people on our bikes if the weather is nice enough, since the datsun is no where near ready.
Are you talking about the Jacktown Steam engine show. I live like 5 miles from there.

Yup, Jacktown. Went last fall, it was great. Will go MUCH earlier this year, got stuck in the mud looking for parking.
