weird decal remains...anybody else heard of these?

Post by Datsun182 »

So I was looking at my cars body for rust and holes tonight and I was looking at the rocker panel and the lower part of the front fenders. Looking closer I was able to make out the words "1500 gt" on the lower front fenders and a slighty discolored stripe running along the rocker panel to the rear. It kinda looks like the writing they put on the shelby gt/mustangs cars. I tried to photo it for you guys but it doesn't really show in the photos. I was wondering if anybody else has this or has seen this on another datsun roadster. I am wonder what a roadster would look like with this mod, so please post photos if you got them.

it's kinda like this writing....

I've seen 510s with "DATSUN" across the rocker panels in big bold letters. My guess is that it was either a dealer installed option or aftermarket.

Looks like a previous owner was inspired by 60's/70's muscle cars....

Or I suppose it might have been a dealer trying hard to turn a "Fairlady" into something tough and masculine!! :)

I've seen quite a few roadsters with the lower body striping.

About 6 years ago, I checked out a 1964 1500 owned by 'Danny Datsun' whose Dad used to be the owner of Downtown San Jose Datsun.

He had a 1500 with similar striping. Here is a picture of it:

Decals

Most of you are too young to remember, but Canon and many others made aftermarket side and windshield decals for about every possibility in the late 60' and early 70'

They were an option on the S30 Z (240/60/80) too.

It was a aftermarket decal that the dealer most likely put on. Have seen a few as My dad ran a Datsun Dealership back then. Have seen even more when the Z came out including a vinyl top for those that remember how popular those where back then.

Okay noob question...I see SLR SRL? so either those are the strangest cameras I've ever seen or Datsun somethings. What the heck are they? Sort of a mad max feel to 'em. Oddly attractive like mia angelo. haaha.

Ahhhhh... a Holden. Got it! I thought it was some unknown bizzare Datsun I had never seen before.

I have so much to learn (hangs head in shame).

weird decal

Post by Tim »

Hi Datsun182,

I just finished restoring my 1600 roadster. I have used the Datsun 510 decal on my roadster since 1973. Of course it was not original to the roadster but I liked the look. When I redid my car, I chased down the stripes to a place in Florida. attached are some photos of my car taken back in October. It shows the stripe of which I am speaking and the one seen on many Datsuns in the early seventies.
