Sorry we didn't see "Bob" in Solvang...I was really looking forward to seeing him.
Sometimes, as they say, "Life gets in the way..."

I have a little wiring to finish and an exhaust system to build, and Bob will be back on the road...

Looks like you guys had a great turnout at Solvang!

I will have a complete update here soon!

Bob lives! Let's just fast forward and see some photos of the car during its first test drive last weekend:

Here is the engine compartment, simple, clean and functional:

Exterior view:

Wheels are 15x6.5 Watanabe's (15mm offset) in the front, and 15x7 (19mm offset?) in the rear. Tires are 205/50/15s.

Anyway, I still need to get the car licensed and insured and I will start shaking it down while I am driving it to my day job-- a 100 mile commute!

Yes, I have photos of all the major parts of this conversion, and I will update this thread with more photos and information for those who are interested in doing this swap. I have 2 more cars that are getting this swap this year, so you can follow along from home... :)

For those in the Northwest, I will see you at Canby!

Wow! Watts look great on Bob. That's what an engine bay should look like, clean firewall and inner fenders, no silly chrome or outrageous valve cover colors!
Any interior pics?

Great work Michael.

Any chance of a Christmas present? Like maybe a detailed Bob update? We've been patiently (very nice, check your list twice) waiting since April! We'll even take a new year's present!

We want Bob! We want Bob! We want Bob!

Michael, can you hear the crowds of 311 lovers chanting?

Thx!!!!!

Since you asked so nicely...

Bob was completed late last spring and he was heavily exercised all summer all over Oregon and northern California!

Image

Bob was built to sell to help pay for future projects around here, and a new prospective owner flew up from San Diego and drove him down to Shasta for the Datsun Roadster meet. Needless to say, 700+ miles over a long weekend and he was hooked on SR power and Datsun Roadsters, and by the end of the weekend Bob had a new owner!

Image

Image

Bob is being exercised nearly every day in the SoCal sunshine, and the new owner reports that he has been running flawlessly and he cannot remember having so many smiles per mile.

Another great photo to share:

Image

Right before Bob left for SoCal, I put him on the scales to get a weight for my database. Bob is a 69 2000, and other than the S14 SR20DE/5-speed, 15" wheels, and Miata seats, he is stock in every way. 2000 lbs. overall weight is pretty good!

I am currently documenting the build of my personal roadster and I will update this thread with more detailed instructions as I have time. I have a post about building motor mounts about 90% completed and I will try to get that posted here before the end of the year.

Until then, keep on roadstering! Keep those SR swap questions coming, and I will do my best to guide you guys through this awesome swap!

Merry Christmas,

Dr. K meets RoadsterBob

It was wet and cold,
We could not go out and play,
So we stayed at home,
On that dark, dreary day

In a heated garage,
with plenty of lights,
I put wax on my roadster,
And dreamed of warm nights.

I was angry and sad
and a little bit dissed
that the weather had turned
to such nasty cold mist

In the street, on the driveway
I heard a loud song
A big giant K
had come dancing along.

"No! No!" said my roadster,
"Don't open the door!
This is not the same K
that we love and adore!"

Too late! I had welcomed
the big giant K,
and he led me on many
adventures that day.

"Tell me Bob" said the K
"Is it really that wet?"
(Though my name isn't Bob
K still calls me that yet.)

"There are places to go,
things we haven't yet seen,
and you have in this place
the most perfect machine."

"No! No!" said my roadster,
"I don't have a top.
My wipers move slowly,
and sometimes they stop.

My heater is broken,
my wires are not right.
I fear that I cannot
drive safely at night"

"Bob" said the K
"Do you drive this fine car?
Can you travel to places
to see where they are?

A reliable, trustable,
wind in your faceable
powerful, turnable,
fashion embraceable
wonderful car."

"I'll drive" said the K
and he opened the door,
and we left the garage
with a howl and a roar.

"This is fun" said my roadster,
"I have to admit
that the rain and the cold
don't dismay me one bit"

So many the roads
that we traveled that day.
So many the sights
and the sounds on the way.

As we came to the end
of the cold, wet day
we returned to the house
and put roadster away.

"Well, Bob", said the K
"Have you had a good time?
Did we go really fast?
Did we stop on a dime?

Was it wonderful, magical
do it againable?

Or was it just wet?"

The roadster was sitting
in puddles of grime.
Some owners would surely
have thought it a crime
to drive in such weather
so dark and so drear
without top or heater
Oh My! and Oh Dear!

"Bob", said the roadster
"Between you and me
If you really like waxing
then buy an MG"

I turned to the K
and I said with a smile
"In all our adventures
I loved every mile

Soggy, foggy,
cold as a froggy,
slippery, slidey,
no place to hidey,
Rusty, trusty,
fills me with pridey"

"Good", said the K
I expected no less.
Here, Bob, take the keys
and clean up this foul mess"

The K sang a song
as he danced down the street
"If you don't drive your roadster
the K you will meet!"

Everything looks great. I know this is old but I'm curious to know where the battery was relocated to. Didnt see it under the hood. Thanks for any info!

We put the battery into the package tray on the passenger side of the car. We build a simple frame work that recesses into the floor that holds the battery. This way you don't loose any trunk space either...

This thread is not dead! I will be updating it with more build details such as how to build motor mounts (if you don't want to buy mine) and other cool things that we do on these conversions.

More soon,
