How big of a pain is it to replace a tach cable
Upon finishing up the work I just did, I managed to break the tach cable. Should this be a "quick fix" replacement, or are they a major P.I.T.A. ?
thanks,
Will

I am told that with the later cars, it is easier to change the cable by dropping the steering column, but I have no experience with it.

Will, I installed a 8,000 RPM tach and a new Nissan cable in my 68 a couple years ago and the replacement cable that came from Nissan was a pain to install. The metal housing part on the tach end is longer than the original and did not line up very well. I believe I ended up re-routing the dash end of the cable thru the steering column mount thats under the dash. For some reason the newer cables have this change to them. If you have a newer one compare it to the old one and you will see what I mean... Bill

Tach Cable.
Hi Will,
I also did one recently, as long as you are good at jamming yourself under the column its not to bad a job, but as Bill said I had trouble with clearance, but about 1 hrs work...
Cheers...

OK, about an hours job, I'll set aside 6 just to be safe. After spending 4 days doing nothing more than a head swap, and having everything that could go wrong happen, I plan on rerouting the new cable as well.
thanks,
Will

Re: How big of a pain is it to replace a tach cable
Thread revival:
Tach cable at guage end is a pain to try and install. Fully agree. I did this somehow before but need a better process....
Neg battery cable removed.
I think dropping the steering wheel via the 4 bolts is best for access?
Do I have to remove turn signal collar surround plastic pieces first?
What is the best routing for the cable, thru the metal housing where the steering shaft 4 bolts are?
Thx
Linda

Linda, I found the straightest shot to be from behind the steering column then directly over the top bracket that hangs down for the steering column. You don’t need tho drop the 4 bolt steering column.

Re: How big of a pain is it to replace a tach cable
I’ve gotten pretty good at contorting my fingers just right so that I don’t need to remove any bolts. Sometimes a gentle wiggle on the cable as you are trying to unscrew the end helps to free it up easier.
