But it isn't me. It is Joaquin. Can SOMEONE near him drop by and help him get his car running right? It is damned tough to diagnose problems from a computer screen...

Thanks Sido! I got it sorted out somewhat its just the typical "driveway failures" But I drove it to the 91 to the 55 to the 22 and to the 5 no problems!!! But its running hot. If anyone can help me diagnose please help why I run hot!! And some tunning!

Thanks Sido and 311s!

couple easy ones, the bare basics you probably checked

Did you make any changes that could be it?

Is it really hot, or just hot on the gauge? I steal my wifes digital cooking thermometer to verify.

Do you have a thermostat?

Is the timing retarded?

Running lean or vacuum leaks?

Does it ever cool off while driving? long straight run, idle, etc.

antifreeze at about 50/50 or less?

Good pressure cap?

This all happened after I took off the solexes. My timing is probably still off. And or my header is causing problems. My guage reads 200-210, I thought it was probably because it was too close to my HOT HOT header, but one day it went about 5-10 degrees past 210 and I shut it off in my garage and I heard bubbling coming from the engine!! I am going to try it with a Cooking tester next now at 180 degrees and see whats really happening, I removed my thermostat because it seemed to be sticking and not opening it all the way! And the temp is the same.... Im going to check the Timing AGAIN! I just replaced the exhaust/intake gasket becaust the cheap gasket I had obviously had a leak because it was purple and it was a bit wet. I left it idling and it got hot. I reved it up to about 2 - 25k rpms with the electric fan in the front of the car hooked up and it seemed to stay steady at about 210 degrees but that takes up alot of juice!! I have the mixed antifreeze that says dont add water. My cap is sealing off well now(Ron lent me one,THanks). And now I have a leak by my radiator. That drips a very very small amount. I think its time to do a 3 row.

Bubbling noise coming from the engine might indicate that there is still air in the cooling system and must be purged out.
Its a pain in the butt getting it all out on the 1600 (not sure about 2000).

Take off the rad cap on your head tower and squeeze the lower rad hose several times to raise the antifreeze level up to top of the fill tower.
If there is air still in the system, it should come through the bleed hole in the thermostat.
Make sure you wrap a towel around the fill tower to catch any antifreeze overflow.

Damn, I finally decided to take some time and read the book more thoroughly and said hm. This makes sense! So I adjusted my timing (it was about 10 degrees off. And wallaaaaaaaaaaa My idle stays at about 700 rpms, and does not die! My car no longer OVERheats, and it really goes now. I am in love all over again. Hope to see how it does tommorow in the sun/day heat! Its all in the timing......

Don't forget to replace that thermostat with one that works!

Enjoy!

It still seems to get too hot on the freeway at 4k-4.5k. Any ideas?

Lack of a Thermostat, without one the water goes through the rad too fast and can't release the heat.

1.Check for vacuum leaks
2.Make sure the carbs are not too lean

Mine ran cooler after a radiator recore. The old core was too blocked to clean.
