Since I'm fabricating a panel to close the hole in the transmission tunnel and also hold the rubber shift boot, I have a question: If I remember correctly, the wide portion of the boot is toward the front of the car, right?
I checked the opening in the trans tunnel, and it appears to have parallel sides, so that's no help. It seems like the boot should be wider at the front than at the rear, but I just wanted to make double sure before go cutting metal.

Why don't you use a stock shift plate and avoid the headache? I have a couple of them I think...

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think I have enough room left between the fuse block and the plate with the ignition, etc switches on it for a stock piece. This is for a "race" car, and there is nothing stock left in the interior except for the sheet metal body panels.
I guess I could get by without a shift boot at all, but I want to close up the hole in the trans tunnel. Helps center the shifter, too.
