Fixing a leaking Diff

About to tackle a leaking diff. (CSP311)

It seems to be leaking from where the diff bolts into the housing.

Will be able to have a better look tonight.

I was wondering if there was supposed to be a gasket, or any sort of sealant in there.

Any tips about fixing leaks would be appriciated.

Yes, there is a gasket there. The roadster ones are still available from Nissan. Not sure about that one. If not, you can cut one out of gasket paper. It should seal dry but I like the thinnest coat of Permatex Ultra Blue that you can get on it. The less the better, otherwise, it's the curse of the blue worms. When you tighten the bolts and a bunch squeezes out on the outside, just as much squeezes out on the inside.

Well, Looks like i'm going to have to pull the diff and replace the gasket.

What thickness gasket paper should I use.

Also can someone give me a rundown of whats involved in removing the diff.

I'll have to pull the axels, whats involved in doing that.

Remove the wheels and drake drums. There are 4 bolts that hold the hub/axle assembly to the rear end. Remove those and the axles/hubs pull right out. Unbolt tye driveshaft and the bolts all around the diff and it will slide out.
When I changed my diff there was no gasket, but no leaking either. I got one from one of the vendors when I did the swap.

Here is the part number for SPL 311 differential gasket, I used in my 69 SPL311 fit perfectly. I dont know if this will fit you CSP311. hope this help

If you don't use the correct gasket, your toe-in will be off and you will eat the insides of your rear tires. Been there, done that. It could also lead to a broken axel as well (thats how I found out about the gasket causing toe-in issues, the insides of my rear tires were bald and there was no gasket on the diff when I pulled it apart to remove the piece of axel stuck in it.)
