Hope for the next generation
I went to sears today to buy a couple of tools and wandered into the tire shop to check out the prices on a set of Falken 195/50/R15. The kid behind the counter asked if I would want an alignment on the car also. I told him the mechanics probably wouldn't believe I was putting 50 series tires on a car like mine. He asked what it was and i told him it was a Datsun Roadster. He said " the Fairlady?". You could have knocked me over with a feather. He told me about his old roommates 1600. We talked about Datsuns for a few minutes and I'm going back tomorrow for my tires.

I didnt know there were that many young roadster enthusiasts out there. Up to recently, the only people I have been able to talk Datsun with were in their 40s or so. It makes me happy to know you guys and gals are out there.

On the other side of the world (Philippines), a lot of young guys like myself are beginning to appreciate classic cars like the Datsun Fairlady. From Mini Coopers, Porsche 914s, 60s Ford Escorts, 70s Toyota Sprinters and Celicas, VW Kharman Ghia's and especially Beetles - the youth here is very much as enthusiastic as the more "distinguished" car enthusiasts/collectors. There's simply more "character" in driving and maintaining these classic sports cars/sedans than building a Honda EK pocket rocket with a B20 swap.

Oh, yeah, definitely. Enjoy/indulge/over-indulge so you'll have all sorts of fond memories/stories when you become "old."

I was almost 18 when I bought my first roadster. It was spring 1979. It was a beautiful car. Ran great, looked great, almost flawless. When school started, my senior year, this was a good project for auto shop. Even though it ran great, I had to pull the motor, punch it .60 over with domed pistons, balanced, blueprinted, new cam (Iskey?) kept the SU's as I couldn't afford webers. This car hauled #ss (moderated for the young people) I raced this thing into the ground. It munched stock V8's. To make a long story short, I took a beautiful machine, and turned it into a monster. Just like the 76 Nova before it. All the adults at the time said I was a fool or worse. But I liked the lowerd, wide tires and rear fender flares at the time. It was cool then. Ahh to be young again.
Well now i'm in my "40's" I get the chance to do it right. So to you young roadsteretts out there, have fun with it. You only live once. If you want to do something crazy, do it! I'm glad to see so many young roadster owners.

I was 19 when I got mine, 40+ now, but still childish. I can just talk my way out of tickets better.

Is there 7 inches between the bumper and the ground? I don't know if it's just me, but when I see a chrome Folgers can where the tailpipe should be, my first thought is always, shall we say, negative.
I learned something when I had a "slightly" worked over 340 in an otherwise bone stock looking truck....Stealth is fun, and much less time spent in traffic court. Same engine/trans mufflers when it was in a 73 Dart Sport, couldn't drive across town without a "safety inspection". The Saab SPG turbo was good too, fast quiet and completly un-noticed by law enforcment.
Maybe I'm getting old...(No comments on the old thing, Evan...I know where you live)
