differential seal replacement and bolt remover question

Hi Guys,
In a 1966 1600, is the bolt part of the housing? I am trying to remove the bolt, to get to the seal, but every time I put enough force to turn it or for something to move, I stop because the entire housing is moving. My understanding is that the bolt is separate and should be removed first and that its independent/not connected to the other part, but just keeping it in place.

I have remove the little pin of course.
Or am I wrong and in this model the entire thing comes of. I have the parking brake on but it still moves.

The nut is just screwed onto the shaft in the center. Pull the Cotter pin, secure the wheels & rotate the nut. You may have to lock the flange so it won’t rotate, I used a couple bolts & a pry bar to hold it. The flange should just slide off.
When you are tightening the nut after seal replacement, be carefyto not over tighten it. I used the specs in the manual but that is for a new build. The nut needs to be tightened until the pinion has the required drag, I don’t know what that is but someone should speak up. I ended up taking my differential to a shop for a bearing replacement.

Or maybe I'll just give up, put it all back together, add some Oil and take it to a shop when I get the chance.. oh boy.

when you do the seal, recommend doing the speedi sleeve. I skipped the speedy sleeve and it ended up leaking again a few months later.

Cbez can you please report on your experience installing the speedy sleeve and the results after you install it. I too have been unable to resolve my leak after trying 2 different seals, although I did significantly minimize it. Thanks!

I installed a new pinion seal from Dean, and a # 99177 SPEEDI-SLEEVE from Oreilly. I started by making "match marks" on the castle nut and pinion shaft, with a center punch, so that I could at least tighten the nut to it's original turns and position. After 15,000 miles, still no leaks....

I just ended up adding more fluid, and just today took it to a shop to replace the differential seal. I didn't have enough space/clearance to do it at home and no leverage or strength
to remove it without the whole thing turning.

I was hoping that they would be able to do it today, but I had to leave it over night. They were full.

very thin metal sleeve that goes over the surface where the seal lip rides.
mine looked like this, you can see the large groove worn in the sealing surface.
