Penrite grease in RCB steering boxes

While reading the latest update on Project Mako, I had asked MichaeL Spriso's opinion on the use of Penrite Steering Lube, which is a NLGI 00 grease, in the late, RCB (Recirculating Ball) steering box, and where it can be purchased. He replied that it could be used in the RCB, and found on Ebay and Amazon. Rather than potentially divert from his awesome build thread with further discussion about it, I thought it best to post a new topic, if it's of any interest.

I've done extensive reading on other car forums regarding the use of NLGI 00 grease in steering boxes. All opinions seem to agree that it's the way to go for the Worm-Sector style, as found in our earlier boxes, but there is much debate if it's "liquid" enough to actually circulate around the balls in the RCB boxes, and not simply get "pushed out of the way". As I replied back to Michael, I'm now confident enough to locate and use the Penrite, in my lightly seeping RCB box. I still have to figure out a way to drain the old 90w gear oil out of it, or if I have to remove it and turn it upside down. Anyone have ideas about that ? There is no drain plug on the late RCB. :x

I had my new-to-me RB box on the bench & just inverted it & let it drain overnight. I also replaced the input & output seals before I installed it. If your box is leaking enough to be of concern, you might consider replacing the seals.

BTW, Cornhead grease is NGLI #0, most agricultural equipment suppliers should stock it.

Peace, Pat

Appreciate the thread. I too got tired of the leaky box and switched to corn head last summer... works great, no leaking! Purchased locally (and considerably less expensively) than online.
