Steering Column Tube

I just replaced a slightly bent steering shaft and have the car up on jack stands. I have a column with a working lock and key. I would like to replace while i have the steering wheel off and the like. Since I am here can i remove the shaft while the dash is in place?
I am concerned that removing it at the fire wall will not allow enough clearance while angling it down and the clutch side to clear the underside of the dash.
I eventually need to install the new dash from Dean and new windshield but that is an involved process i want to wait on just now. But if the community agrees that swapping the shaft needs the dash out, Ill probably wait and continue with the dash mounted key start.

As I recall you do have to remove the dash to get the tube out. You can change the ignition switch with the tube in place, I have done it a few times before.

It may have been bent as a safety feature, how much?

Very slight bend. Suspect it is due to some pressure on it during some repair. After change the steering wheel spins much smoother and does not have the wobble.

Thanks for the advice on the dash. I would have to try to drill the lock security bolts. So I think I’ll just wait.
