Front Signal Light not working - 1600

Post by Effers-Iba »

Hi Guys/Gals,
I'm having trouble with the front passenger signal light not working. I replaced the bulb and relay and that did not solve the problem. The front driver and both rear passenger signals all work. When I put the toggle light switch in the first position, both front parking lights turn on. However, the passenger side is brighter than the driver's side. So either both filaments are on or the wrong one is on (the one that is supposed to flash). The toggle switch turns on the driver's side to the low position (correct one) and again, the signal works fine on driver's side. Any advice on what might be the issue is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A couple of things: check that the globe is not inserted wrong and check for a decent ground on the globe socket.

Thanks for the reply. I'm fairly certain that the bulb is inserted properly. I've triple checked. It seems like the pins/nibs on the bulb base can only be inserted one way otherwise the bulb will not seat properly. Can you point out where the ground points are? Are there other ground connection points that I should be checking besides the socket? Thanks.

The front LH corner of the chassis has a ground screw and that is where the front lamps should be grounded.
Open the hood and find a small wiring loom between the LH edge of the radiator and the washer bottle, that is they.

Should be firmly screwed to the chassis rail.

It's a 1157 bulb ? Not the newer replacement ? For bulb check systems. If the Park lite side works then the ground should be OK. But it's a good idea to improve old ground points
The lead contacts can oxidize and loose ability to DRAW power thru the Neg side . Get a test lite and a schematic diagram here and test various wires

The ground wires are attached firmly to chassis and yes, I installed an 1157 bulb (replacement Sylvania).
Thanks for the diagram. I guess my next step is take it to a mechanic. The car has a KA engine so not sure if the wiring has also been altered.

Have you probed the globe socket with either a 12V test lamp or multimeter to ascertain voltage and ground?

The KA engine wiring should be completely separate from the body wiring for lights and whatnot. As suggested, tracing to find a weak ground, socket, or break in a wire is most likely the path forward.

You'll be glad when you find the culprit and you'll be even more ready for the next challenge!

I'll continue to rule things out and hopefully post my findings/solution soon. I do appreciate everyone's input.

To check the light you can unplug the two green wires from the light that hook to the engine harness and run 12 volts to each lead. You can easily eliminate if the problem is the light.

Dimmer element will hook to green with blue stripe on the engine harness per drawing.
