Flat dash light bulb change

Post by Idahoguy »

HI Forum
I need to change 2 bulbs (1445) in my 66 1600 dash. How are the bulbs loosened from the gauges? Do I push in and turn clockwise or counter-clockwise or just pull out? Just pull out hasn't worked or trying to push and turn either. Advise please.

Changing bulbs in an old dash can be a real puzzle. I remember wrestling with the dashboard lights in my '70s beetle. For those, it was a push and twist kind of deal, usually counter-clockwise. They were super stubborn at first. Felt like I was gonna break something, but a little patience and a steady hand did the trick.

If push and twist doesn't work for you, it could be worth checking a specific forum for your car model or even a repair manual.

And hey, speaking of bulbs, I read on leds.to when I was looking to upgrade my beetle's lights to LEDs. They had some helpful tips on choosing the right ones and fitting them properly. LED upgrades can be a cool improvement for those old dashes, giving a bit of modern flare to the classic look.

I believe if you are looking from behind the dash...counter clockwise but if you are in the seat and reaching behind the dash then clockwise. It's based on your placement/perspective.
